Is it a mortal sin to receive Communion without believing that it is truly the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ?

Mortal sin requires three things

a) grave matter (and yes, receiving Communion without belief is grave. At least some non-Catholics also understand this, since Paul talks about not receiving ‘without discerning the body’)

b) full knowledge (knowledge that it is a sin - not everyone would realise this) and

c) full consent (no-one forcing you or anything. I remember when I was a kid if I didn’t receive Communion my parents would ask me why, so sometimes out of embarrassment I would go even if I was in a state of sin, and might have gone if I lacked belief too. Being as young as I was, this may mean I didn’t have full consent).

If all three conditions are present, then yes, to receive without belief would be a mortal sin.

yes or no
According to St. Paul (1 Corinthians 11:27-29)

Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.

Of course, Paul was addressing people who knew what they were receiving. Those who don’t know aren’t culpable, however before receiving communion in any church a person ought to know what that church teaches about it so he can make an informed decision whether or not to receive.

Hi Bill,

Corinthians 11: 29,30) He who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks a judgment on himself. That is why many among you are sick and infirm and why so many are dying.

The answer is Yes! It is A Mortal Sin to recieve Communion without believing. The many that die in this state because they do not recognize the Body as many people do, this goes for some catholics and many if not all protestants who do not believe in the True Presence, well let me put it this way, I sure don’t want to be in thier shoes, when we come before the Eucharist.

We have a Merciful Savior he is willing to chatise us by being Sick and Infirm in order that we would come to Recognize the Body and Blood that it is Truly Him and repent and believe but if we die in this state not believing we would surely die! Am I saying this NO! Jesus Christ said this in:
(John 6: 53) Therupon Jesus Said to them: "Let Me Solemnly Assure you, If you do not Eat and Drink the FLESH of the Son of Man and Drink His Blood, YOU HAVE NO LIFE IN YOU.

And one having no life in you when one dies, that means only one thing, condemnation to hell.

So I urge all my brothers and sisters who do not believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, to Ask the Lord for this Grace to believe, before it is too late.

Therefore when you plead before Jesus you can not say that you were not told of this, when you have been.

Not quite. As I stated above, those who have not been taught what the Church teaches about the Eucharist are not culpable of mortal sin. Simply quoting Bible verses and then pronouncing judgment isn’t how the Church interprets Scripture.

Nor is the full meaning of the Eucharist is so plain to our Protestant brethren who have been taught all their lives that communion is just a symbol or to believe in “consubstantiation” instead of “transubstantiation”.

Jesus will indeed judge, but he will judge by what we knew and how we were instructed. And, in most cases, even those who instructed wrongly were themselves taught wrongly. There is a vast difference between a material heretic and a formal one. The Church is the one that makes that definition not lay people interpreting Scripture for themselves. 😉

Della,

These protestants that come here to this Catholic site are told about the True Presence and these can’t be excused any longer. Now that they have heard it, they either accept it, or not.

Now perhaps if a Protestant never heard about the True Presence then perhaps these are not guilty of a mortal sin, again only Jesus Knows.

But for these Protestants that come here to this Catholic Forum site and have heard the Truth about the Eucharist being 100% Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and reject it, now this is a different story, no excuse for these protestants who now know the Truth, don’t you think? These protestants have been instructed. Yes, the Holy Spirit teaches even through the internet!

It is the Holy Spirit who guides these protestants to come here to this site to know the truth about the Catholic Church about the Eucharist… A few believe and accept the TRUTH!

And if they don’t accept? Are they to be excused? Does one want to take that chance with their souls? Does one truly want to say its ok if they were not instructed? No!

I pray that they do accept for they, again, have been instructed! No longer can they say to Jesus Christ when they are being judged “But we were not told”… Jesus intern will say “YES YOU WERE.”

No such thing as “mortal” or “venial” sin. All sin is sin and the wages for sin is DEATH.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Would you mind sharing with me exactly where in the Word of God it says all that?

A catholic is supposed to be in a ‘state of grace’ when receiving holy communion. If he has unconfessed grave sins he is required to reconcile with the Church first, through the sacrament, and obtain absolution. Otherwise, he is already commiting sacrilegeous sin in doing so aside from having heretical belief not consistent with the Church teaching.

…“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.I Cor 11:27-29, CCC 1385

A catholic is supposed to answer ‘Amen’ when the priest says, “body of Christ…”. Meaning, he affirms and believes in the Catholic sense and NOT only in a personal sense. Because that is what we profess in the creed prior to partaking in the Eucharist…‘We believe in the Holy Spirit… in one holy Catholic and apostolic Church…’- we are ‘one’ in our Catholic faith.

…“The Council of Trent summarizes the Catholic faith by declaring: "Because Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly his body that he was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the conviction of the Church of God , and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation.” CCC 1376

I hope this helps and somehow answers the question…

You guys are making a strong case that you worship a different God than we do.

Is that a protestant answer?
Or is it that YOU cannot answer the op’s question because you DON"T HAVE an answer?🤷
