I don’t watch movies like this, but my friend who is part of the Catholic Young Adult Group I belong to is going to see this. Here is the synopsis:

A married man is granted the opportunity to have an affair by his wife. Joined in the fun by his best pal, things get a little out of control when both wives start engaging in extramarital activities as well.

From the description it is clear they are making light of adultery and I can’t see how it can be justified to watch this, if you hold to the Catholic moral teachings.

It isn’t a mortal sin to watch the movie, it is a mortal sin to deliberately place yourself in a near occasion of serious sin, or deliberately look at impure images or video, or deliberately listen to impure things.

The movie sounds like complete trash though, so I’d suggest staying away from it.

Think about the impact of purchasing a ticket to see productions like this. A film that depicts adultery in multiple scenarios, will make money. The producers see the demand and make more movies like this.

Consider also, all we have is a gift from God. If you use your money and resources and time to support a movie and production company like this, do you think God will be pleased?

All of our decisions are accounted for and will be considered in our particular judgement. When the verdict is read about your eternal fate, do you want something like this movie to be on the official record?

Seek to do God’s will and shun the rest.

When I saw the title, I thought you were talking about “The Hall Monitor,” good movie 🙂

There are times when movies that deal with sin have what we call “artistic merit” and are appropriate to watch. If the movie treats adultery in a completely fun way without any harm done then it wouldn’t have any merit and could be sinful.

I agree with all you write and as I said I am not seeing this movie, a friend is.

I think that grossly immoral movies are less troublesome than subtly immoral movies. Everyone knows adultery is wrong, and it’d take a lot more than watching a few movies to change your mind. However, often times the heroes in movies do heroic things which are immoral, and indeed the heroes themselves are often depicted doing nothing moral and everything immoral. It creates a very twisted society and people lose the ability to judge right from wrong.

All tv has bad morality in it. There may have been a few shows made but that would about all.

In my opinion it’s not a sin at all. It’s just a comedy movie. It’s obvious it’s just a movie meant for fun, not advocating adultery. And bonus I can’t wait to see that movie! Love Owen Wilson. He’s so funny! 😃

Perhaps for someone with a well formed conscience but young folks who are impressionable?.. I’m not so sure that our youth should be viewing such “fun”…teachccd

Sorry, but I had to reply to some of these posts. Some of these posts are ridiculous. Your worried about the movie an how it will impact your friend? Far less damage will be inflicted by this movie than by many of the so called “christians” I have met in my life. This isn’t pegging all christians this way, but many.

Honestly, you want a good laugh? The movie is hysterical. Would I cheat on my wife after watching this? Not in a million years. Am I going to be “judged” for watching this? Not a chance. I lead a good life. I believe in charma. I’m a vegetarian due to my love for animals, I perform charity work, I’m a strong believer in manners and raise my children the same way.

If your worried about watching a movie that was made purely for entertainment value, then you have bigger things to worry about.

I use to work in an office and I have heard this type of comment not infrequently.

What happens in a move like this and others similiar to this is a gradual eroding of
values in a quiet and subdued way. Time after time we see the same senario of
bed scenes and infidelity. If a movie or tv program movie dosen’t have 2 or 3 or these
birthday suit episodes in them it dosen’t draw enough people to see them and their
rating goes down. It becomes second hand and ordinary to expect these and other
unethical movies to be shown. Then week after week, month after month, and year after
year, we find ourselves less contrary to these actions, and we begin to think nothing
of them. This is the beginning of the end of our value system as it is tossed into the
movie schredder of morals. And if we aren’t careful, we become the next victim of this
moral schredder when we begin to think, after seeing a naked pair, “why, this isn’t so bad.” And from there we begin to secretely wish, “they didn’t show enough.” And
we then begin to lean toward the bad instead of the good almost without knowing it.
Then the final question one day arrives,“How did I get here?” And the answer to that question is “slowly”. And the end result is that our hearts become hardened.

There is another way to treat this subject, and that is the right way. By extracting the
unnecessary immoral scenes, and treating the subject as objectionable as it really is.

“You have hear it said, do not commit adultery. But I tell you anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Mt 5:27-28)

I wouldn’t see it. Not everything has to be shocking or dirty to be funny, and not everything has to be funny to be worth one’s time. I have a sense of humor and appreciate a good laugh as well as anyone else, but it gets very old when I see people continually throw out their sense of morals to watch filth just because it makes them laugh.
