Is it a mortal sin to willingly read anti-Catholic material?

Hi everyone. Is it a mortal sin to willingly read anti-Catholic material out of curiosity? šŸ¤·:confused:

I know nothing of what the church says on this, but I can only guess no. I donā€™t even see how it would be a sin to be honest. If you donā€™t know the arguments of your opponents, how can you show them they way?
 
I highly doubt such a thing is even a sin, though perhaps it depends upon the nature of your curiosity. In my opinion, Catholics well-grounded in their faith should stay current on anti-Catholic rhetoric so as to better prepare defenses. If the particular Catholic is wavering, and could be confused or tempted by the material, it might be imprudentā€¦ but even then, it seems unlikely to be a sin, let a lone a mortal one!
 
Iā€™m not a Catholic, but I couldnā€™t see how something which could help you defend you faith could be. I read Anti-Semitic material, particularly on stormfront.org to keep me aware that there are still a lot of crazy people out there.
 
Definitely not a mortal sin (unless it was about how to contact spirits or demons or something, because why would you even want to know how to do that?)

It depends on what you want to read. Post some examples if you want some specifics.

Also, I guess it depends on why you want to read it? Like if you want to deepen your Christian faith, and choose to read works from Protestant authors, I would question it, because you do not want to be misled.

Oh well, it definitely wasnā€™t anything about how to contact spirits, demons, or anything like that. It wasnā€™t Occult material. It was a Chick tract. My motive for reading it wasnā€™t the best but I knew instantly upon reading it that it was false and it did not affect my faith at all.
 
I certainly hope not.

Before I became Catholic, I read The Da Vinci Code.

My baptism cured any ills wrought from that book, but Iā€™m not sure whatā€™s worse: the temporal punishment I have both here on earth and in purgatory for reading it (time spent that I will never get back), or the eternal memory of how. incredibly. terrible Dan Brown writes.

itā€™s not a mortal sin but it might damage your faith if itā€™s not strong.
 
After reading the info in that link, I have no desire in reading anything by Chick. Our time would be better spent praying šŸ™‚
 
For someone with weak faith, someone who is easily swayed to leave Catholicism, it could very much be a sin. Avoid what does not increase your faith.
