Question:
My understanding of a mortal sin is basically breaking one of the commandments. I am looking at the catechism and it also tells me that the criteria is essentially a deliberate and basically something done after making a choice to do it knowing that it was a sin.
Here’s my question:
If I blurt out (gosh darn) while I’m driving (but the other one…lol) ~~YES, I firmly believe I am taking the Lord’s name in vain, and yes it is breaking the 3rd commandment…
But if an instinctive blurting as opposed to some sort of thought process and then decision making, wouldn’t that be a venial sin? If it was just blourted out, heat of the moment? I mean either way, the person is going to confession (me) but MY question is, do I tell the priest I’ve commited a mortal sin, I used the name in vain, or do I say, I have no mortal sins, but I did break the 3rd commandment in the heat of a bad moment. Mortal involves a decision, venial is not thinking first but you still made a boo boo. SO, if I break the 3rd commandment by blurting out (gee-wiz) and then thinking…MAN…I just broke the 3rd commandment…realizing then what I’ve just done, I mean, I’m not trying to lessen anything, I’m trying to distinguish severity…yes, it’s a commandment broken. (Bad ju-ju) BUT, is this something that can be forgiven in the Penetentiary rite? OR is the fact that a commandment was broken REQUIRE confession? I guess that’s my question, (I’m trying to word it so it makes sense & not sound like I’m trying to lessen or cheapen it, I’m trying to figure out how bad it is & is it something that I can take care of in the penetentiary rite & still take the eucharist, and STILL confess ANYWAY for good measure, or…anyway, I’ve been w. the Church for 2 years, and I have a good grasp on things for the most part, now I’m basically trying to fine tune things mentally & spiritually.
I’m trying to stay honest w. God by staying honest to myself, & I guess I’m just trying to reach an understanding of the nature of blurting out (dad gum it), breaking the commdmt, as opposed to willfully & making a decision to do so. See what I mean? anyway, a priest giving his 2c. would be AWESOME…catechists or RCIA people PLEASE, insight is welcome. Thank you!!! I basically am trying to figure out if I am able to take part in the eucharist,
