Is it a requirement for the Divine Office to be recited aloud if done individually?

The LOTH was a great comfort to me for a long time. It is the absolute best model for personal prayer.

I usually prayed silently, but not always. Of course one could pray sotto voce.

Most of the time I chant the Divine Office; mostly in Latin for Lauds and Vespers, in French (usually recto-tono) for the rest, and I read the minor hours silently during the week as I am at work in cube land.

All methods are valid.

It used to be a requirement to at least whisper it out loud; it isn’t anymore.

I personally find that there are certain elements which I can only pray well if I pray aloud, such as the two longer readings in the Office of Readings.

It’s your prayer, do what works for you in a way which keeps it prayerful and meaningful.

I find the same thing for the readings. The Office of Readings (or Vigils in my case) I chant recto-tono in French (my mother tongue), including the readings. Today being a solemnity though, for the psalms I took Latin antiphons from the Liber Responsorialis with French psalm tones set to the Gregorian modes.

I do the opposite way.

When doing it alone, which is not that often, I pray Morning and Evening Prayer out loud. When I do the Office of the Reading (which we do not do in community) I do it out loud except for the longer readings, I do those silently as, for it, it seems to take to much to do it aloud.
