She keeps bringing up verses in the Bible where Muhammed was supposedly mentioned and I correct her by explaining about ‘YHWH’ being God’s name etc… but she gets angry and tells me I’m wrong. Even when I prove that I’m right, she tells me there’s something wrong with my brain or something.

I can’t help but feel angry and upset. I put a green scapular in her room and she watched The 13th Day, but it will probably be ages away if she realises the truth. If she doesn’t accept proof, then she has obviously been brainwashed and I don’t see how a brainwashed person can change. I know I should give my problems to Jesus, but that’s easier said than done.

Hi Thyme!
Ager is one of the seven capital or deadly sins.
the other six are pride, covetousness, lust, gluttony
envy and sloth.
Try not to be angry with your sister and the best way to do that is to avoid arguing with her. Agree to disagree but pray for her. .God works in mysterious ways.

Hi Thyme
odhiambo gave you good advice. You sound hurt ,angry and upset all natural responses. Im sure everyone of us at some time or another suffers these on a regular basis. That is because we are human and have failings…we are not perfect.
All we can do when we feel like this is to avoid the confrontation and pray for strength to overcome our hurt and forgive the person. It is probably the hardest thing God asks of us to forgive those who hurt us.However, if we don’t try to forgive those who hurt us how can we expect God to forgive us our sins and failings against him? I was hurt yesterday by a member of my family. It hurt, it still does, I pray for help strength and guidance.I forgive the person completely but avoid confrontation with him.I try very hard not to harbour a grudge.
I wish you well and understand how difficult this is.God bless

Anger is an emotion that requires a regulator - to portion out the when, where, the quantity and quality of what is allowed out 😃

From what little I know about Islamic faith, Allah is master and his worshipers are slaves.

In Judeo-Christian philosopy however, God is Father, we are His adopted children and friends.

I know it’s painful for you, (we all wish our powers of persuasion worked 100% and on our time clock) but the more you argue with sister, the more protective and clinging she will be of her choices.

Pray for her, love her continually, deepen your connection to the Trinity and perhaps over the years, your sister will have a change of heart toward Christianity. The Holy Spirit is within each of our souls, waiting for us to turn toward Him.

Is it a sin to be angry/upset with my sister?
Is it a sin to be angry with her? Yes
Is it a sin to be upset about the situation? No

It is up to you, and your confessor to determine which is which so that you can work through these issues.

All you can do is present the truths of these matters. Nothing else. Now that you have had some experience with her and how she reacts to your proofs, it really should become easier for you to anticipate these negative responses and to let them roll off.
Next time she gets “personal” about your brain or whatever. Just shrug and calmly restate your proof.

Yes these things are always easier said than done, but we must do them all the same.
Pray, Pray, Pray for guidance, patience, serenity. Then Live out the Gospel in your life. Since she is the one the gets “angry” and calls names etc, it is obvious that she is the one who is truly insecure. She is trying to chip away at the rock of your faith. So be Granite, cool, solid, immovable. Her tools are not sharp enough to destry such a faith.

Peace
James

Thank you for all your replies. I won’t reply to them individually as they are all good.

My dad rung me to talk about and he told me to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy for her. I know my parents and little sister are praying for her as well. My Dad said that he explained things to her, but she has ignored him. She has always been the sort of person to ignore anything which disagrees with her views, which is the main reason why I’m upset. God won’t force her to believe the truth. If she ignores facts, then how can she accept His guidance?

Is it really a mortal sin to be angry? I haven’t acted on it, I’ve asked God to give me more patience, so was it really grave matter?

Thank you once again.

In order for the anger to be Mortal you would need to choose it and nurture it. This does not seem to be the case here, but be careful how you evaluate your feelings. Again, it is best to talk to your confessor on this.

Of course even if the anger is not “chosen” it is still a negative (sinful) thing and very dangerous to the health of your soul. That is why it needs to be fought - replaced with the virtues of Love, patience and Hope.

I’m gld to hear that you (and your sister) have a good support network in your family. The more prayers, the more gentle and Christian evangelizing with her, the better chance that she will begin to see the errors of her views.

This brings up a point too. Since she tends to tune out things that disagree with her views, perhspa the best path is one of asking questions. Making her explain her views. By this she will be forced to step out of any “brain-washing” answers she has and to think for herself. This in turn can lead to her “revising” her views and coming home to Christ.

Peace
James

Most of us, attempting apologetics, get angry 🙂

Anger is a reaction - but so is humility, patience, understanding, love, etc.

As I’ve aged, I’ve learned that it is important that I get my point across and then I leave it at that. I’ve stopping hanging around to “take another person’s invertory” (butting in where I’m not wanted).

Arguments are a poor way to solve family issues.

The basic problem with anger is that it’s addictive. The longer that a person uses anger as an expression of behavior, the more a person will use it, and the harder it will be to change that compulsive response.

Anger all too easily, turns to rage.

It would be very bad for all of your future relationships, if you and your sister develop an ingrained anger toward one another.

My two older sisters, haven’t spoken to one another in a loving way, for over 30 years. Their animosity toward one another has affected the relationships that my neices and nephews have with each other as well and my brothers-in-law. Anger pollutes what it touches.

Prayer is the often/usually the best answer. I think it was St Ambrose who advised St Monica to “talk to god more about your son [St Augustine] and to your son less about God.”

Hi again Thyme.
’ Being angry’ may or may not be a mortal sin, it depends very much on the circumstances and also the degree of that anger and what it drove you to do as a consequence.
Remember, however that for a sin to be a mortal sin, THREE things are necessary.
1: The matter must be serious, whether it is a thought , word or action.
2: You must know that the thing you are doing is wrong, very wrong. You cannot sin through ignorance.
3:You cannot commit a mortal sin unless you freely choose the action or mission which God has forbidden. if someone forces you to do something which is sinful, you have Not committed that sin.
Thyme, these are not my own words entirely, they are from 'The Faith Explained ’ a lovely book by Leo J. Trese.
Be blessed!
