My brother cusses especially when playing computer/ video games. I was wondering if it is sin or not to play games with him knowing that he’ll probably be cussing. I already told him in the past to control his rage.

Just let him win, and everything will be fine. 🤔🧙👨‍🔬

j.k.

No, it’s not a sin.

That’s funny, Jamal. As for the OP’s question: Id say no.

Yeah well, if a person can’t be wise, they should shoot for funny.

Both at the same time is even better!

Hello.

Bad language is offensive and affects people. My opinion, is that it’s not good to be around people who habitually use bad language, know it is bad, and don’t try/want to change. But if you’re around people for the reason of being with them, that isn’t sinful. Sinful is, for example, in my opinion, if you’re around them to learn how to cuss. I guess it’s motive.

What is the age range here? I’d say if your brother is 10 it would be a different situation than if he was 25.

Just my opinion, please take or leave…

Definitely let them know swearing and especially the cruder words is very offensive to you. Some people don’t mind curbing their language, and it’s good for them. But say it in the kindest way possible. Its very ingrained in some people
and they don’t mean it to offend

Cussing is not a good use of the gift of speech, but its sinfulness is limited by the circumstances. Cussing at God or the saints, at the Church or at priests or religious, is a grave sin compared to the occasional cuss when you lose the 35th level of Dungeons&Lizards. But the intention is what ultimately matters. Sometimes we don’t even have the intention to cuss - it has become a habit. Vicious habits are not just taken off. They are to be replaced by another habit reflecting the opposite virtue, in a tedious, lengthy work of self-mastery. A bad habit is quickly acquired and may take a lifetime to be uprooted.

Being in the company of a sinner is definitely not a sin, otherwise our Lord would have sinned much, since He came to seek sinners. You may however be in a near occasion of sin if you are tempted to cuss yourself.

A good way to handle the situation is to use holy indifference (just ignore his cussing, it’s his issue, not yours!) or to just refuse to play with him and if he asks why, very politely explain that his cussing makes you feel uncomfortable.

Nagging, scolding, being “holier than thou”, and commanding people are not good ways to preach the Gospel. People become very defensive, and they see the rest of us as tied in iron shackles why they are the liberated few, the free, the ones who fly high. Better ignore a foul word and show by example that there are other ways to react when you lose a game. He may simply not know any other way to react. Rage is very common in gaming and driving.

When he blasphemes, say a short prayer such as Blessed be the Name of God. When he just uses vulgarity, pray to St Michael the Archangel for your brother.

Little strategies like that will help both you and him.

From what I understand there is a difference between cussing and cursing. Cursing is taking the name of the Lord in vain along with other holy objects. Cussing is vulgar language. Saying the nasty equivalent of crap for instance would not be a sin per se because it just refers to poop. However, it is associated with vulgarity in our society and should not be used since it is associated that way. Thus, you might sin by causing scandal saying cuss words.

The only possible case see I could think of would be sins of omission. We must rebuke people, either silently or verbally, if people swear in front of little children or take the LORD’s name in vain.

Yes Cursing is a sin,you can politely convince him and say, you will not play if he curses, also it hurts Jesus ,as in Matthew 5:48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 12:36,37 I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter; 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Wisdom 1:6-10 5 For a holy and disciplined spirit will flee from deceit,
and will rise and depart from foolish thoughts, and will be ashamed at the approach of unrighteousness.6 For wisdom is a kindly spirit and will not free a blasphemer from the guilt of his words; because God is witness of his inmost feelings, and a true observer of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue.7 Because the Spirit of the Lord has filled the world, and that which holds all things together knows what is said; 8 therefore no one who utters unrighteous things will escape notice, and justice, when it punishes, will not pass him by.9 For inquiry will be made into the counsels of an ungodly man,
and a report of his words will come to the Lord, to convict him of his lawless deeds;10 because a jealous ear hears all things, and the sound of murmurings does not go unheard.

James 3:9, 10 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so.

I don’t think it is a sin to be around sinners. Jesus ate with tax collectors. The idea being of course, that you influence them instead of the other way around. And of course Christians should avoid engaging in sinful behavior themselves, being cautious and even restrictive about the amount of time or engagement in these situations. But I swear on occasion, sometimes out of frustration, sometimes just for effect, almost a colloquialism. I always thought this was low on the totem pole of sin, but more and more I look to venial sins as the ones that really undermine you as a Christian, as they are so much more common than mortal sins. You let your guard down so much more here. Mortal/venial is in many ways a false, unfortunate distinction. I am trying to eliminate this habit of swearing. Maybe gently, jokingly mention it to him - plant a seed. Then leave off - let him figure it out when he is open to that idea. I have been around people who notice my swearing (don’t say anything, they just don’t ever do it), and it does make me self-conscious - this is good.

have you ever considered how much you forfeit playing computer games? You never get that time back. Just a thought.

Yes. Shouting “you are an idiot” with malice at your brother is far far far worse than shouting the “f word” when a brick drops on your foot breaking every bone in your toes. Vulgar words are crude but not necessarily curses. Very mundane every day words can be used as curses.
Saying anything with malice is sinful. Using a crude word out of habit is probably an imperfection.

People who say “I never swear!” but gossip and demean their neighbours are in far greater danger of sin than a blue collar worker with a crude vocabulary.

Well it’s mostly cussing at the circumstance but he might of blaspheme though. So it’s not really a sin to keep playing games with him knowing he’ll probably be cussing. I could say a short prayer while we are playing too.
