Is it a sin to be gay?

I have a student asking if it is a sin to be gay.

I have responded that the churches position is that we do not condone this action and we are not to judge but be merciful and pray for them, what is and should I do?
I believe we may have a oppertuntiy to either push someone away from church if we respond incorrectly, I believe it to be improper behavior, am I correct or ?
