Is it a sin to be mad at God?
Feelings are unintentional thus they are not sinful. However, dwelling on some thoughts can be sinful. For example if you feel mad at God there is nothing wrong with it, but if you choose to stay mad at God then you are sinning. Our feeling of being mad at God comes from our own shortcomings and misunderstanding of God, so it is natural that sometime we might feel to be mad at him; however it is because of us and not because of Him.

I cant speak to doctrine, but as far as human experience, I do not believe it is a sin. The Psalms, in particular, are full of angry and desperate pleas to God.

I lived in fear of my anger toward God over the loss of a loved one and only after being able to speak openly of it with some wise spiritual people( I am a hospital chaplain and I went to a consultation with my supervisors) was I able to pray openly about it. I spoke my heart and asked for forgiveness. It was a scary but wonderful experience which brought me closer to God and helped me understand myself.

I believe the reason Jesus used “Abba” and not some other image was that God is capable of that intimate care and relationship. Of course, no one goes around encouraging calling God out, but if you are angry, I believe God will receive it.

Your reasons, though, are your own. I had the benefit of some very wise, caring people, including a nun who was very mature and “got it.” I hope you can find the same to help you along to your deeper relationship with God.

I know that I was very angry with God at one period in my life. I regret that I thought such terrible things against our Lord. I do know that God was gracious to forgive and that I was restored to him, much as a prodigal son.

I cannot say when it is sinful to be angry at God or not, but I do know we have an awesome and all-powerful God that is also merciful and loving. God does not deserve the anger of mere human beings, but he can handle it like a loving Father.

It is a sign that you love GOD.
You only are furious with whom you love.
i wish i had thought of that in my angry stage with God. confession and guidence got me through it and come out stronger in my faith now. 😃 😃 👍

Mother Angelica tells of once getting angry at God and refusing to talk to Him for a month when one of her projects didn’t work.

She notes that it was difficult, since she was obliged to do an hour of adoration in the chapel each day.

Jus to add that I actually don’t regret being angry at God because by being so and its only this year, but it meant I have been able to move on in my faith faster than I think I had been still relatively happy. I first tried confession but whilst I was relaxed a while it didn’t last and later when felt completly empty I spoke with the same priest and he was able to put me back on track with God. It would have been a make or break conversation as I told the priest afterwards. Thankfully it was a make conversation. Whatever was said between us, worked. I came away far happier then I arrived. It was about a month after I realised that I’ve stopped being angry with God and now at peace with God and its a far happier feeling, I can tell you. He was able to make God accessible for me via prayer and from that I have found, after 25 years, but have found a way I am happy with God in Prayer and I still not always sure but a quick phone call… I have discovered too why we have priests there to help us. They really do help us in times of any kind of crises but yeh it was it is really good being shown how to reach God and it took a period of anger with God to get me there so I don’t regret being angry with God. Because it brought me closer to God than I ever have been through being able to share with a priest who good at listening and guiding. And like I say, if am uncertain he really did mean that, I ring and he says the same, reaffirms what he said and that sets me sure enough that it really is a way and I like it.
Everyone goes through times of anger with God. Its perfectly natural believe it or not. Its a part of life. It does show that you have a real relationship with God. Just don’t let it eat you or destroy your faith like I nearly did though for me its come out stronger but that mayn’t happen all the time for people. Go and have a chat with a priest and about it all too. why you are being angry etc. 😃

I was really angry at God for a few years …I thought I had fallen away from Him forever … and I did not feel bad about it at the time, I felt justified. I feel bad now…and do what I can to make amends, but I think everyone goes through an angry stage at some point.

No. God doesn’t deserve our anger but by showing your anger, you’re being honest to Him about your feelings. And intimate (and healthy) relationships involves honesty.

I believe it varies depending on the way in which we express our feelings. Love can be frustrating but it should never be malicious. A good example of a loving frustration would be saint Teresa of Avila. One day she was riding a donkey and the donkey kicked her off and she fell in a huge mud puddle. When this happened she looked up and asked God, why? God replied that he treats all of his friends like this. Saint Teresa then responded back by saying: “no wonder you have so few”. In this way saint Teresa showed a loving and humorous way of being frustrated with God.

Yet telling God “I hate you” when things do not go our way is to forget why we have been created in the first place which is to love honor and serve God with all our heart, mind, body and soul. Most of the time we can see we are angry with God because we are selfish and believe we know what is best for us. We lack faith, hope, and charity and quickly forget that God never does things which are contrary to the benefit of our souls.
