I just was wondering, is it a sin for me to buy the High School musical soundtrack? I know it comes from Disney and for some reason something tells me it is a sin. I don’t know if Disney is immoral or what but I feel that it may be a sin to buy this soundtrack even though I really liked the music from the movie. I worry that by buying this I may support an evil cause or something.

Thanks and God Bless

As I recall (and i could be wrong), Disney supports Planned Parenthood. As Catholics, we are not required to boycott PP sponsors, but I encourage it.

I guess the question is the material on the soundtrack morally offensive? If it is, why do you want it? Sin is in the will. Ask yourself if there is something in your will that makes you want to purchase this soundtrack that you find questionable.

If the question is should you buy from Disney, that’s something you have to decide on your own. Their support of Planned Parenthood is troubling.

Its more of Disney supporting a bad organization. The question that comes to my mind is does the church require us to boycott these industries under pain of mortal sin?

I literally laughed out loud when I read that title. I would advise asking more pertinent questions to the world, like “How can I do the most good for the unfortunate?” or something, instead of worrying about petty things like that.

Have you read the thread? Do you realize the implications?

Not sinful - just really annoying. Maybe I only think that because I’ve literally listened to this CD about 5,000 times, thanks to my 4 year old son who LOVES getcha getcha getcha getcha head in the game.

Seriously, unless you are going to grow your own food & make your own clothing from sheep you’ve raised yourself, you’re going to end up supporting all sorts of companies who may support things you disagree with.

Rather than boycott, I choose to try to be the best Christian Witness I could possibly be and pray for those who are lost.

Yea, my sister watches it a lot too, it’s pretty annoying. Good point though.

The “Disney - Planned Parenthood” issue has come up before, and I don’t believe it is this broadly true. The only documentation I’ve seen noted here is that Orlando park management gave some money to the Orlando PP branch several years ago (supposedly) for a specific teen “education” campaign. While I do not approve of this, I haven’t seen anything that documents that the Disney organization as a corporation is a PP supporter. When you think of it, why would they support the elimination of their future customers? If anyone has info to the contrary, would be interested.

No, as far as I know, we Catholics are not required to boycott industries etc. that do not follow catholic teachings. If we were, how would be live in this sinful world? You are free do not buy the soundtrack but that would be simply your decision.

The idea of boycotting in such a manner as is described here doesn’t make much sense. If less movies or soundtracks are sold, why would they not conclude that it’s simply because the movie/soundtrack isn’t as popular as they expected. You could write them a letter, but you’re not required to do that as well. Jimmy Akin wrote an article on a similar topic - if I find it I’ll post a link.

I agree but we have to try none the less.

Boycott’s don’t work when individual people don’t bother to inform the company or the retailers why and when they are boycotting. There has been no affect to Disney since the Christian Right and some Catholics have boycotted.

Lol. My six year old daughter used her Christmas money to buy the DVD and I have seen or heard it in the background at least 20 times in the past few weeks.

Did you know the main character, the girl, is homeschooled? Just an interesting tid-bit.

Boycotts often have the opposite effect… products and companies that would have otherwise flew under the media radar are now thrust onto front page headlines because of the boycott.

as an insider (my past) in the marketing world, i know of 3 ‘boycotts’ that were orchestrated by the comanies who were the ‘target’ of the boycott.

the consumer is the puppet… the corporate teams are the puppetmasters more than anyone of us realizes.

My daughter owns this DVD also. I never thought watching this would land me in hell. I’ve got bigger struggles on my plate than worrying about a bunch of high school kids singing during basketball practice…😃

I have not seen the film discussed here. Judging by the ages of the children mentioned (4&6) I would personally have concerns other than what the products creator support-they’re too little to understand that. As long as the product does not involve adult issues (violence, adultery, or encouragement of these, etc.) it should be okay for the kids. As for buying it for one’s self, as long as it does not cause you to want to act out adult issues-it’s okay. If you feel the act of buying it supports something evil, you can always burn someone else’s copy (if you have nothing against burning c.d.s)🙂 .

WHAT?? I’m sure your statement was in jest…:bigyikes: … :hmmm:

Oh, I consider burning CDs to be a mortal sin against “Thou shalt not steal”. I won’t even cop a prayer or religious image off a website for devotional use without permission.

The only offensive thing that I found was in one song they make a refernce to shaking one’s behind while dancing. Well, I would just skip over that one. Also there is the song “I Can’t Take My Eyes off of You”. I would skip that one too and besides, it was not in the original movie anyway.

Should all movies be so “corrupt”.😉 😉

I meant burning a copy as a means of not supporting the company (because they are technically not supported when you do this). Yeah, it was in jest:D
