Is it a Sin to Call Somebody a Bible Thumper?

this guy (i dont know if he was a religion) all he said was he a was a “Christian” yet he was judging me for being catholic & saying that christmas was pagan & he was cussing too & he said “Get deep with God” but he said gods son is not named jesus then he said aliens are demons and vampires are demons & i said he was brainwashed & said he was in a cult & then i said “You know saying Oh my God is a sin if you’re not praising God” but he said churches are messed up these days
then he’s like " Catholics Worship Mary " & i said “You know nothing of catholicism Read the catechism” & i said he was a Bible Thumper & a hypocrite
By the way, is there any guy / girl on CAF that has played Bayonetta? i just want it because i hear its very hard on higher difficulties but, it doesnt seem satanic the angels look like birds & everything looks like mythology i only played the demo, should i rent it ?
& then the guy says “How dare you call christianity a religion” i said you cant just sin & believe he died for you &
 
go straight to heaven, ugh hypocrites these days Bible Thumpers.
 
i really wanna know if any guy / girl on CAF has played Bayonetta … i really wanna know 😦 too
 
Sounds like you both lost your cool and so yes you sinned when you called him a “bible thumper”. The sin was anger and the words expressed that anger.

As to the other fella, I doubt he is any kind of “Christian” and simply delights in getting others all riled up and arguing. Then he can gloat about how Christians don’t “turnt he other cheek”.
The best thing you can do for this person is not get drawn into arguments with him. Simply live the most Loving and Christian life possible and pray for him.

Can’t say anything much about the video game except that if it’s main fucntion is “blasting” things, I’d stay away from it.

I understand your frustration on both issues. Having someone criticize your faith, especially with erroneous facts and confused thinking, is exasperating and very annoying. The term “Bible thumper” is probably uncharitable as you used it, as it was meant to offend or hurt your friend. I know of some people who would consider the term a compliment, and use it to refer to themselves. However, like the N-word and the Q-word, its proper use would be self-descriptive. It is poor manners, and perhaps insulting, for someone outside the community to use the phrase.

As for Bayonetta, I guess that is a video game for the PlayStation 3. I see you started a couple of threads in the Popular Media forum, but couldn’t find anyone who had played the game. That has got to be disappointing.
 
I tend to call 'em like I see 'em.
If I see 'em pounding on a Bible, they’re “thumpers”.
Turn on any of those “christian” channels, especially on a Sunday morning and watch the thumping. There is so much of it! And they’re usually screaming into a mic and sweating profusely.
They are what they are.
I can’t wait to head out the door to Mass after a few minutes of watching that.
 
There’s nothing wrong with calling protestants bible thumpers.

There’s probably a lot wrong with playing some of the video games I’ve seen.
 
If someone takes a Bible and physically thumps you with it, then they might be a Bible-thumper.

Actually it’s a reference to preachers who get themselves all riled up and hit their Bibles with their fists while preaching. 🙂

I think you both lost the cool for a little bit and have Matt 5,43-48 in mind. But i understand your point. If it is a sin? I think that is for other than me to judge. Being just the newbie and (studying to convert to become a catholic).

I agree this is possibly a simple case of baiting. However, it is possible that a person without significant formation has melded ideas from several sources they feel are credible to form some particularly unique view of reality.

The error to avoid here, and that I have fallen victim to myself is not to match their tone, but to set your own. Something I have practiced (in lower stress situations then that), is an apologetics posture called “back-peddling”, more commonly seen under the Socratic method. The questions are meant to jump-start critical thinking, but often require you to know common responses to them.

This a situation I was in and how I should have responded in retrospect:

You Catholics are going to hell because you worship Mary.
Thank you for your concern for my soul, but I don’t understand, how is it that we worship Mary?

You sit out here and say that prayer to her but there is only one mediator between God and Man.
Well I’m sorry I still don’t follow, but what about Paul’s exhortation that we should pray for one another? Isn’t that a form of mediation?

(At this point there isn’t a ready response, so he may move on to another point, and this gives an opportunity to non-offensively defuse each of the objections he has.)

And now I have some questions to help you critically think over your video-game dilemma:

Do you think playing this video game will help you to better know God and reveal him more fully to the world?
Is there something more important than knowing God or revealing him more fully to others?
If not than why might you feel compelled to do something less important?
How might you then better equip yourself to do what is most important?

These are questions I have had to grapple with, but in grappling with them I have found my life come more in conformity to that mission God gave us. The results are a peace and joy that I feel are akin to heaven on Earth.

Absolutely!

You have to refer to a “Spade” as nothing else besides a “Spade.” If he’s sowing seeds of malcontent, then he’s an agitator; likewise, if he tells untruths, twisted tales or distortions, then the person is a liar. If he’s selectively using bible tales and quoting texts out of context, he’s also a lying Bible-Thumper.

In the case of the OP, the anti-Catholic opponent was simply baiting the Catholic, just to get his goat. I doubt that the anti-Catholic person actually follows much of any actual religious organization. No true Christian of any serious denomination behaves like that.

If that “someone” happens to “thump” this old guy with a bible or anything else at all, the name I happen to call the guy is going to be the absolute least of his concerns… :rolleyes:

Something to jog our Catholic memories - avoid quarrelsome people; 😃 2 Tim 2:14 -17 (GodsWord translation). 14 …(b) and warn them in the sight of God not to quarrel over words. Quarreling doesn’t do any good but only destroys those who are listening. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as a tried-and-true worker who isn’t ashamed to teach the word of truth correctly. 16 Avoid pointless discussions. People who {pay attention to these pointless discussions} will become more ungodly, 17 and what they say will spread like cancer.
 
Whether it is a sin to call somebody a bible thumper - I don’t know - but there are *bible thumpers * whom one should avoid at all cost due to their extremism and acute tunnel vision - delighting in quarelling just to prove a point. (theirs normally). 🙂
 
Most people would probably consider being called a hypocrite more seriously offensive than being called a Bible-thumper – depending on the person. I mean, hypocrite is more universally insulting. A person who is not truly a Bible-thumper but has been misunderstood as that could just dismiss your remark as a sign of ignorance or error, but being called a hypocrite is extremely personal.

I would consider it Confession material, yes.

Mt 5:22:
But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
