Is it a sin to commit suicide?

If someone has no hope, no help and hard to survive, at the end if he/she committed suicide, is it a sin for him/her soul?

Sometimes life is too hard for someone to bear, and others cannot understand. Sometimes it’s everything happened to push him/her to walk this road.

If he/she did a lot of good to help others, love God and obedient to God when he/she was on earth, then if he/she committed suicide, will it be a sin for his/her soul and will go to hell?

I am sorry, I hope this thread will not cause more suicidal thoughts for anyone, but I really have thought about it… but it seems the only thing I scare is “I will go to hell definitely” ?

The question of whether or not it’s a SIN (or, more specifically, a MORTAL SIN) is entirely different because moral culpability makes the sinfulness of a specific action subjective to the situation itself. These factors for culpability are:
  1. Grave matter
  2. Knowledge of the wrongness of an action
  3. Free will decision to do it anyway

Although we cannot judge any one’s state of mind when they commit suicide and the Church has never condemned any one to be headed to hell. It is a dicey proposition.

No one has the right to take his/her own life, for our lives ultimately belong to GOD.
Having no Hope, no help and hard to survive sounds like one that has given up on GOD.
Read the book of Job, also Jesus never gave up on GOD.
And HE never gives up hope for us.
Offer up the suffering you are experiencing to GOD, unite it to the suffering of Jesus on the cross. Ask HIM to give you a ray of light to which you can latch so that it, dispels the darkness that surrounds you.

Depression is a nasty companion and should be treated medically if you have been diagnosed of and suffer from.

If you are seriously considering suicide, then you need to get help - immediately. Please, call your local emergency services and get some help.

I have had friends who have been in your position before, and they have never regretted getting help. Please, reach out to someone in the way you have on this thread. The real problem is not if you will go to help for committing suicide - it is the fact that you wish to end your life.

Please, please, don’t end your life. You just need to hold on, get help where you can, and eventually things will look up for you. It will take time, but it’s so, so worth it.

I recall reading a very good quote on suicide a few weeks ago - from a jumper on the Golden Gate:

“right after I jumped, it became crystal clear to me all my problems had reasonable solutions…except for the jump”

this guy survived. i hope I never am faced with contemplating suicide seriously, but hope my faith in the Lord will be strong enough to carry on.

there are suicide prevention hotlines to call and speak to someone.
get counseling immediately and talk to someone if you are feeling suicidal. God bless!

In short: yes.

Life is a God-given gift, and by effectively rejecting that gift and denying grace, one commits the worst sin imaginable: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (the unforgivable sin). Christ suffered the most inconceivable pains during His Agony in the Garden, Scourging at the Pillar, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, and Crucifixion…all for our sake. His mortal nature wanted the Father to “pass the cup” from him, BUT, as that was not the Father’s will, he fully consented. Our temporal sufferings, as intolerable as they may seem at times, are NOTHING in comparison.

We are all called to carry our crosses. No matter how much good we do, how closely we follow Church teachings, etc, if we despair and take our own lives, we cut off God’s grace and damn ourselves.

It’s nearly impossible to know what people are thinking when they kill themselves.Those who do so while suffering from mental illnesses may not have given their full, willful consent to the act, so it may not be a mortal sin in such cases.

Yes, it is a sin. It is a grave sin, and the fact that you are asking this question demonstrates that you still have full use of your reason. You can expect to go to Hell if you commit suicide.

You need to speak to someone who can help you right now while you still have use of your reason. I would not put this off. Call a priest. He can help you. All you have to say to him is, “Father, I have no hope for the future, and I’ve been thinking about killing myself.” He will take it from there.

People, this isn’t a time to get all theologically technical with whether or not it would be genial or mortal sin.
 
Suicide is the equivalent of stating that “my problems are so great that the creator of the Universe cannot fix them”.

No matter how you slice it, it is still baloney.

Whether the person gets Hell for it or not would depend on their state of mind at the time.

I doubt any one on here can tell you who goes to heaven or hell when someone dies.

Suicide is a grave matter.

Additionally, if you have suicidal thoughts, you MUST seek counseling. We cannot give medical/psychological advice on here.
 
The instinct to be alive is one of, if not the, strongest impulses in our human mind.

So if someone is driven by compulsion or despair so strong as to overcome that instinct, there is a good chance that they were not in their “right mind.”

As such, the Church does not pronounce on the salvation, or lack thereof, of suicides.

Objectively, killing oneself is grave matter. But no-one can know if in a given instance, it rose to the level of mortal sin.

There’s a huge difference between cannot fix them and will not. Many people who are suicidal may love or have loved God and knows God has the power to help them but willfully does not which can make them feel even worse.
 
You’re not alone with your thoughts on this board. Many posters and I have had them. I wish I can say things will get better. Unfortunately, the answers to our problems are difficult to find. Yes, you should get some help. However, it’s not like in movies and TV where you find a therapist, take some pills and everything is OK. We may never recover or get better. The healthcare system is bad and the mental health system is worse, as shown by this segment script for “Denied” from CBS’ “60 Minutes”. Search my posts where I discuss what lies ahead of you.

I do not know. I wonder too. Some people believe suicide is the ultimate act of self-hate and you will be condemned to hell for it. I personally do not agree. I can think of worse things people do, yet feel no shame or remorse for. Ultimately God decides.

Well then why doesn’t He? If God would answer peoples’ prayers there might be less suicides.

And BTW, I attempted to take my own life last April.

Good luck trying to figure what that solution is as He won’t answer. You might as well try to put together IKEA furniture without the instructions or the tools
