Is it a sin to debate?

No.
I sense you’re very anxious. Many of these queries should be addressed in your RCIA class since you’re still in the period of inquiry. I wouldn’t worry about debating others just yet.
God bless.

It’s not a sin to debate, but if you’re going to debate at least have some tact. Which, is often where I failed.

It is fun to debate, but the trick is finding enough wisdom to say your piece and then let the other fellow have the last word. It’s good discipline and it’s good for humility.

Guest1, can you tell us what prompted your question, what makes you think it might be, and which commandment it would be breaking? Help us understand where you are coming from this this question.

Of course not. I don’t know which Saint it was, but I remember she was asked very difficult questions about the faith before she was persecuted, and the holy spirit helped her answer them with ease. Something like that.

That aside, debate can be really good. It’s usually done in a mature manner.

It’s actually a blessing being able to debate in my opinion! What the world needs more of, especially right now, is people willing to sit down and talk things out rather than with war or violence. However, debate does seem to hit a wall when you have 2 sides that refuse to even listen to one each other, each convinced they are 100% right and the other being 100% wrong. That being said, I can say that I believe NO religion is 100% true, because death is something the living will never know til they get there.

It’s in Romans 1:29 in the KJV
So first, he KJV is not the Bible translation a Catholic should be using. There are much better versions available.

Secondly, this is what is called taking something out of context. If you want to understand what Romans is about, I encourage you to do a bible study.

What Paul means in this particular verse is more like arguing for argument’s sake or being contentious.

If it’s a sin then how are you going to convert anyone with the Gospel?

Very few people are going to fall to their knees and accept Jesus without questioning the claims you make, you’re going to have to convince them first and they’re probably going to have their own ideas for how the universe works or why it’s here.
