Is it a sin to defy Canon Law? Is obedience a virtue?

Perhaps, they are not Catholic and are unaware that is no longer necessary?

Perhaps, they just like the look?

Who knows?
Hilary Clinton liking a mantilla?!! I don’t think so!!! Besides if its not a custom anymore then their advisers would have told them that.

Exactly - someone somewhere is telling them it’s a matter of respect and is expected. Otherwise she wouldn’t be seen dead in a mantilla, I’m sure.

Perhaps, or perhaps not. There is the old adage, “When in Rome, do what the Romans do”, but presuming that any staffer would necessarily know what the custom is or is not on an issue that may have a minor custom status to begin with in the Church at large is presuming a whole lot: the staffer may not even be more than a nominal Christian; or give the fact that 2 out of 3 Catholics do not attend Mass, a nominal Catholic.

There is also the issue of political decorum, which is not directly related to issues of Church decorum. The whole world of the Vatican is not generally what one would find in the local diocese in terms of protocol.

Or for that matter, in Washington, DC, although DC will have more protocol than your local equivalent.

Why is it that when I see the Pope in a photo with a Head of State that his wife is ALWAYS wearing a head covering then? I can recall seeing Hilary Clinton wearing one in the Vatican.
That is not even in the presence of the Holy Eucharist so why would they wear a headcovering? Ohhhh, I know, because there is a custom that women wear veils when they have a private audience with the Pope. It has nothing to do with the former canon law that women wear headcoverings in church.

Even if that were true, let’s think about what it says. As holy as the Pope may be, he isn’t Jesus and if its a custom to wear it in the presence of the Pope then shouldn’t it be worn in the presence of Jesus?

Just a small note on the covering of a womans head.
Were as canon law my not require it. The Scripture is pretty clear:

from the NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1Corinthians 11:5-6

5 But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same thing as if she had had her head shaved.

6 For if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should wear a veil.

I really don’t think we need A separate law in the Church canon to decide this.

As for Baptism If the Church states that It should be done as soon as possible then it should be done as soon as possible.
