Is it a sin To put on the church’s AC without permission?

Not a sin, but out of courtesy toward your priest, ask first.

Jim

Are you coming in early for Mass or something like choir practice and the place needs to be cooled for the comfort of the attendees? That is an act of charity!

On the other hand are you just popping in to pray and it is uncomfortable so you are going to cool it down then leave with the AC cranked? That is unkind because the AC costs $$.

Things can be wrong and not be sinful. They are rude or unkind or selfish. But, we don’t know if your reasons were any of those things.

It depends on the rule in your parish. Who is supposed to put it on or can anybody do it?

This invloves expenses and if it is a concern, then you should follow whatever the ruling is. If any parishioner is allowed to put it on, then there is no problem.

Please NEVER EVER turn on an air conditioning system you don’t know anything about and do not have permission to use.

HVAC systems are often very delicate. If, say, it was out of coolant you could burn out the whole system and cause thousands of dollars in repair costs. If it was not serviced for the year you could distribute mold spores into the air and create a toxic environment.

You also don’t know if the church is in a place that can afford to have the AC on or if there are adjoining (unknown to you) windows or doors open or a million other things.

Call the rectory emergency line if necessary. Just please, never ever touch HVAC systems without approval from the owner/curitor.

I kind of doubt it, but as a member with access, you are a steward of the churches resources. If you are only going to be there an hour, and the AC will be cooling 40,000 square feet, I might think twice about doing it.

Intent, is always a consideration of the law.

Depends on your motive and if someone told you not to do it, but you did it anyways then yes, it would be a venial offense. I would always ask first, but don’t worry about it too much. God bless.

Yeah, like someone else said, just ask the priest, or other person in charge.

No one but Caesar may touch the thermostat!

What’s next ?

Take money out of the collection basket without permission ?

( church should begin putting mouse traps in their basket, really )

you really shouldn’t do that. I’ve worked in enough office buildings to know that HVAC systems are carefully zoned, and they don’t want you messing with the thermostat.

Yup, exactly. If you don’t have explicit permission to touch it, then implicitly that means you should leave it alone. Air conditioning is a huge cost and only authorized members should be changing the controls.

In Laudato Si, Pope Francis writes, “People may well have a growing ecological sensitivity but it has not succeeded in changing their harmful habits of consumption which, rather than decreasing, appear to be growing all the more. A simple example is the increasing use and power of air-conditioning. The markets, which immediately benefit from sales, stimulate ever greater demand. An outsider looking at our world would be amazed at such behaviour, which at times appears self-destructive.”

I suggest you stay away from the AC controls. Just. Step. Back. Turn. Around. And walk. Away
