Is it a sin to do university work on a Sunday?

Hello,

I’m behind with my work and a couple of people are going to a friend’s house to study together. I will be going to Mass first, but I was wondering if Catholics are allowed to do course work on the Sabbath?

A quick answer: this has been asked several times before, and the answer has always been - yes, you may do university work on Sunday (so long as you attend mass, which you mention you will be doing).

No, isn’t a sin to study on Sunday. You have given honor to God at Mass and you clearly have a reverence for the Lord’s day.

From the** Catechism of the Catholic Church**

2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body.

You will have worshipped God…just make sure you have some relaxation…and in studying with your friends you are helping each other (works of mercy). 🙂

2187 …Traditional activities (sport, restaurants, etc.), and social necessities (public services, etc.), require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside sufficient time for leisure.

This extract from the second paragraph, 2187, tells you that the Church does acknowledge that work is sometimes necessary for some people, and so long as they honor God and go to Mass, and have some rest, and show some kindness to others, they are fulfilling the Sunday obligation.

Remembering that God is pleased by things like this makes me remember how wonderful he is 🙂
 
Absolutely not! The sin is in doing unnecessary activities which distract from the worship due God.

A friend sort of implied that because I am engaged in night shift work, and start my shift at 10:30 PM Sunday that I was in violation of a commandment. I had to remind her that my occupation is not only necessary work, but that the day was already over.

The day isn’t over until midnight, in that sense your friend is correct. However, given that it’s only an hour and a half, and at the tail end of the day, it’s of no significance in terms of violating the commandment.

LOL . Sorry i think I got the Catholic definition of day mixed up with the Jewish one.
