Is It A Sin To Drink Alcohol

Lets see what the bible has to say. Nowhere in the Bible is the use of alcoholic beverages prohibited. If it were sinful, would Jesus have changed water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11)? Jesus drank wine and was falsely accused of being a drunkard (Matthew 11:19). The drinking of alcoholic beverages is nothing more than making use of what God has provided and is not a sinful act. In fact, the Bible says

“He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.” (Psalm 104:14-15, KJV)
“Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.” (1 Timothy 5:23, KJV)

Notice that Holy Scripture says “a little wine,” not copious quantities. Use of any alcoholic beverage to the point of becoming intoxicated is a misuse of God’s gift and is a sinful act. Throughout the Bible there is a clear distinction made between the use of alcohol and the abuse of alcohol (Ephesians 5:18 & Proverbs 20:1 for example).

People who think drinking alcohol is a sin also think heavy metal is the devil’s music. 😃 They are also the ones who do not shy away from burning effigies of Santa Claus or think their next door neighbour ought to be exorcised for inviting non-Christian friends into their homes. 😃

You forgot to mention that “they can hear the devil speaking to them when they play CD’s backwards”! :eek:
 
While it is obviously not a sin to drink alcohol, what about drinking it in front of someone who is an alcoholic or is recovering from alcoholism?

I can’t think of the verse off the top of my head but it is roughly doing something in front of someone and it causes that person to stumble.

I tried that once. The devil kept saying, “Banana hammock, banana hammock.” To this day I don’t know what he was talking about.

Oh yeah. I wonder if they did the same with gramaphones back in the days of our grandparents? 😃 Man, this ‘tradition’ had to start somewhere?
 
GASP! Didn’t you know Jesus only used Welch’s Grape Juice???

And at the Wedding feast everyone was amazed that they were served the BEST (Welch’s) grape juice first!

 
no it is not a sin to drink alcohol. However, alcohol is an inhibitor and if not controlled people do stupid things. God does say to be careful when drinking. God also says do not be a drunk. Alcoholics are ruining God’s temple because to them alcohol is there God.

So in ways yes it can be a sin if it is not controlled and it brings destruction to somebody or to somebody else life.

Also it is important that we obey the governments because they are put for God for our benefit Paul tells us this in a letter. So if somebody say marijuana is not bad and the bible doesn’t say anything about it then to God it is acceptable or for any drug for that matter they are greatly mistaken. For we are Gods temple and if we ruin Gods temple God will Ruin us. Found in the OT I believe from Isiah.

Also, someone stated with an earlier post that says that if we do something that could cause a stumbling block to somebody then we should be courteous enough not to do it because that statement is stated by Paul in Corinthians I believe. And it says that we are held responsible for them stumbling. So if you do see an alcoholic or somebody that is week with alcohol it would be christian like to NOT drink it in front them. Because if you do they can get in trouble because of you and to God that is not showing the love that God has for us!

(1 Corinthians 6:12):
“Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”—but I will not be mastered by anything.”

It really answered the alcohol question for me :bounce:.

indeed, and this is not limited to alcohol, as even food can become a fatale weapon if not used moderately.
 
Getting drunk is very unwise, and unhealthy, but the drinking of alcohol is definitely not a sin.
 
I know alot of the posts written on this topic are old, but I have to say when looking for answers on this website regarding alcohol, and myself being a Catholic revert, I am surpised at the jokes and comments made.
One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is self control. Alcohol itself is not sinful but I have seen the effects as a nurse and a woman as to what alcohol and drunkeness can do. It is wrong and sinful to get drunk or to drink just a little over a period of time. That is what an alcoholic does. An alcoholic may never be drunk just daily drinking.
Having a social drink, here or there or a beer once in a while is not wrong or sinful, but alcohol can destroy your liver. I have seen men look like nine month pregnant women because of liver damage and they don’t survive. And some of them had only a beer or two a day. I’ve seen alot of other issues in hospitals from what alcohol can do. It’s no joke.
Ask the mother of a child who was killed by a drunk driver (or buzzed driver) what she thinks about alcohol and she may have a totally diffrent opinion than to make fun of Christians who choose not to drink.
As Catholics we are supposed to be concerned about social issues and drunkeness and alcoholism is one of those issues.
The prisons are full of people who committed crimes they might not have done had they not been drunk.
I certainly agree with the later post that quotes:
