Is it a sin to drink holy water?

Not at all - the Orthodox actually encourage it, especially around the time of Theophany (Feast of the Baptism of Jesus).

Wouldn’t recommend drinking water from a church font that hundreds of people have been dipping their germ-ridden hands in though - that’d almost certainly make you sick.

I voted not sure due to I did not know where the source of water was. Like LilyM wrote I would not drink it out of the font in church.

People have been drinking small sips of holy water or putting it into thier cooking as a pious practice for many many years. It certainly is not a sin.

Since the foundation of our faith revolves around the sacremental consumption of the flesh and blood of our Saviour, I can’t imagine having a sip of some water with a blessing on it to be any kind of morallity issue.

I do not think that it is a sin, but as a gentleman once told us (he volunteered at a local church) that there are different oils in the holy water and it would not taste the best.

 This may be true of water from the baptismal font (after all, those being baptised will be anointed with oils as well).

But holy water from the ‘tank’ that many churches will set up for their parishioners, even the water put in the dipping fonts to bless ourselves with, usually has nothing but an extremely small amount of salt added, which wouldn’t be enough to harm anyone.

Yeah I should have clarified that I meant the bottles of holy water that he gave to us.

Sorry 😊

I once watched a show with Fr. Coropi, and he was telling about a homeless shelter that is run by a Catholic layperson. She used 100% holy water and blessed salt in all of her food. They had a priest come in every day and bless gallons and gallons of water for them.

Thanks for the answers. I think I’ll get some to drink, it sounds like a good practise!

No, but as long as you drink it as a devotional act of piety. If you drink it just because you want to, or if you thought it was funny, that would be a horrible thing to do and would be a sin.But if you drink it because you love God, and want to be close to Him and have him in your heart, that would be a good thing to do and would NOT be a sin.

When you try to fill your bottle from the supply in the church,it is difficult to avoid your fingers dipping into the water. Not too hygenic
There is no tap on the barrel we use.

I have no idea, but to be honest, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to drink it.

I recommend tap water straight from the sink. It keeps me going throughout the day. There is no advantage to drinking Holy Water. I would however like a pint of Lourdes water please. 🤷

I don’t know but my brother and I did. I was 5 and he was 6. We found our family’s “Last Rites” set up in the closet and decided to play with it. I can still remember the look on my mother’s face when she found us. It wasn’t pretty.

And how did your stomachs tolerate the water? Probably OK for ya.

there is no such thing as an opinion poll on whether or not an action is sinful. Such things are not determined by a poll. If they were, the 10 commandments would look a whole lot different. In what possible way could someone construe drinking holy water as sinful?

Drinking Holy Water is a pious and ancient practice. The Eastern Orthodox (and I assume Eastern Catholics) drink Holy Water on a regular basis, as do, I believe, the Oriental Orthodox (Copts, Armenians, etc). I believe it was a common practice for us Latins once upon a time as well. St. Thomas Aquinas encourages the drinking of holy water. As another poster already stated, we eat (by Christ’s command) the very body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ…why shouldn’t we drink water that carries His blessing?

On a somewhat related note, if you want a bit more flavour, there are several Trappist monk monasteries out there that produce beer which they bless and then sell…so drinking holy beer is always an option too :).
