I just recently learnt that Catholics are not supposed to eat meat on Friday.I used to do it a lot and sometimes do it because I forget what day it is.Is it a sin to eat meat on Friday and do I need to go to Confession about it?

In most countries we’re only obliged not to eat meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays in LENT (between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday - about 6 weeks).

Although we’re obliged to do some other penance (prayer or good works) every Friday if we do eat meat. But what form of penance, or how much, isn’t clear at all, as long as we do something.

If you forget what day it is and eat meat, that’s not a sin. If you deliberately choose to that is mortal sin and needs to be confessed.

Abstaining from meat used to be the required penance–it still is unless your local bishops’s conference says otherwise. In the USA, we can subsitute other penances, but abstaining from meat is still the preferred penance. If you’re from another country, I’m not sure. Since you didn’t know, it is not a sin, but you should make every Friday be a “little Good Friday” just like every Sunday is a “little Easter.” 👍

Meat-less Fridays are no longer an obligation, except for during Lent, and it also would include Ash Wednesday. ***But ***Fridays are still days of Penance.

This brings me to question whether or not I’m doing things right. I have to go to Retrouvaille on Fridays and do eat meat on Fridays. I do pray, but do you think I’m sinning? Aren’t we supposed to “mourn” on this day?

Regarding the OP, in the US this is not an obligation any more. You can do the penance another way, but you may give up meat if you choose to do so.

We’re supposed to do penance (so your praying is fine). Mourning is optional 😉 Even Jesus said ‘when you fast, do not put on gloomy faces’ :yup:

Thanks for the clarification. Being a cradle Catholic does me no good, I don’t seem to know much since I learn something new every single day.
