Is it a sin to fall asleep during prayer?

Hi everyone. Is it a sin to fall asleep during prayer, particularly during nightly prayers? šŸ¤·:confused:
 
Well, itā€™s not really something you can control - you get tired, you fall asleep! Thatā€™s why tired people have car accidents, they wouldnā€™t if they could control their falling asleep.

St Therese of Lisieux writes of sometimes falling asleep during prayers. If memory serves she was of the opinion that like all parents, God probably loves His children best when they are asleep šŸ˜ƒ Itā€™s also a pious tradition that if you fall asleep while saying the Rosary your Guardian Angel finishes it for you. Iā€™d imagine they do so with other prayers as well.

So I doubt itā€™s a real problem. On the other hand, itā€™s preferable to remain conscious while youā€™re praying, if you can. If you know that praying in bed = falling asleep, for example, sit up in a chair or kneel at your bedside instead.
 
I hope not, It happens to me all the time!

But, seriously it may be a issue if the only prayers you say all day are those while half asleep. If this is the case you may want to sit up in bed and say some of your prayers with the lights on as well as say some prayers throughout the day.

I usually continue to pray after saying the rosary until I fall asleep. Helps to keep my mind clear and helps with a peaceful sleep.

No, not at all!! Jesus says himself: ā€œCome to me you who are weary and heavy-laden and I shall give you rest.ā€ šŸ˜‰

Looks like you just REALLY came to Jesus, and he gave you the rest you clearly need!!! šŸ˜ƒ
 
My grandmother told us that if we fall asleep saying the rosary Mary will have the Saints finish it for us. Others say that your Guardian Angel will finish it.
 
no of course not, in fact when I canā€™t sleep starting a rosary or the divine mercy is a good way to fall back asleep. I try to sit up when I pray the night office but even so sometimes I just zone and wake up an hour or so later, that is why I donā€™t light candles. I have even fallen asleep kneeling (back when I could still kneel).
 
Just think of it as Godā€™s way of putting his cute little baby to sleep by holding him/her on his chest in a rocking chair. šŸ˜‰

I have been having real trouble sleeping lately, and I have taken up this practice! It really gets me to sleep if I say the rosary or Chaplet while I sleep. Although it sucks waking up with a rosary stuck to your faceā€¦lol
 
Is there a better way to fall asleep than with a prayer on your lips?

I donā€™t think so.

I used to do that when I did my meditations in bed. To remedy the matter I try not to pray in bed if I want to get through a long prayer. There is a certain posture that helps (half sitting, half kneeling).

But when I am falling asleep when I am really, really tired, I try to visualize myself as a baby asleep in Godā€™s arms. And I let the last words to leave my lips to be ā€œI love youā€.šŸ™‚

God is so much more loving and understanding than we can ever conceive Him to be.šŸ™‚
 
I wake a lot in the night. I have a cheap string and plastic rosary [from Operation Rescue] that I loop around my wrist. It tends to stay on my arm most nights, though it often crawls up to my shoulder. Whenever I wake up I resume wherever I can last remember praying. If I donā€™t finish five decades by morning, I finish it while trying to get the ambition to get up.
 
I know youā€™re not a child but I remember reading a quote in a book of prayer which read ā€œThe most precious thing in the sight of God is a child who falls asleep while saying her prayers.ā€
 
I donā€™t think so, no. I generally talk to God until I fall asleep every night, so Iā€™d hope it isnā€™t.
