Is it a sin to get angry with an inanimate object?

for example…if my computer is slow and unresponsive is it a sin to get mad and call the computer “a piece of junk!!”?

I would say Yes and No. Since you lost patience and kindness, you committed a wrongdoing in the least. However, to further develop your understanding, I have a couple questions:
  1. Do you know that God’s Word says Always be Patient and Kind?
  2. If so, do you know how to Always be Patient and Kind?
If either of those is No, then simply seek answers.

At least if you aren’t offending the peace of anyone in earshot, yelling at your computer is not a sin. It is superstitious to think the computer cares, and particularly superstitious to believe that it knows when you are in a hurry and hangs up in order to spite you.

Indulging your impatience is at least a spiritual fault. Patience and gentleness, like all virtues, are learned by practice.

And it could also be reasonable and thus not sinful.
 
Just don’t use bad language. Then someone more important than the computer will be angry at you 😉
 
Interesting question. Didn’t Jesus get angry at a tree and curse it to never bear fruit again?

Technically speaking, he didn’t get angry with it. He cursed it.

And he told them this parable: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. (So) cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’ He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.’” Luke 13:6-9

Conclusion: Our Lord would clean the hard drive, and if that didn’t do it, he’d get a different computer.

Plus, we all know his other computer habits would be prudent, because we all know…Jesus saves!
 
To get angry with a computer is entirely reasonable, especially if it is running a certain operating system which I shall not name, for fear of computer retaliation.
 
Many, many times I’ve found myself throwing a video game control down and stomping away. I don’t think it is sinful to feel anger toward inanimate objects, but I do think we can border on sin in how we deal with it. I mean a moment of eruption is one thing, but yelling, screaming, and using foul langauge might be different.
 
Okay, I have to admit I get irritated with electronics all the time.

‘STUPID COMPUTER’ is usually as harsh as my language gets but sometimes I just mouth off to it and give it attitude. Hahah. Honestly I’m not sure how it could be sinful to vent a little frustration at a non-living thing. IF the emotion boils over that’s one thing but if I’m just venting a little frustration I don’t see the harm.

Most of the time I just have a conversation with it to explain why it’s such a jerk. 🤷 It calms me down and stops me from getting upset. Although that can be hard when I have actual work to do and the stupid thing isn’t working properly.
 
Everyone gets frustrated with a machine every now and then, but I’d look around to make sure nobody was within earshot before actually talking to the computer in any way, like cajoling, grumbling, or even cursing. There is no sense in offending anyone, or looking quite insane. The computer itself is not a sentient being and therefore doesn’t even know it is being cussed out.

If, however, you get so frustrated with the silly thing that you pick it up and hurl it out the window, that would be sinful, if to nothing else but yourself when you see how much replacing it is going to cost you!

LOVED the line about “Jesus saves,” I can picture Him keeping the books for St. Joseph’s carpentry shop on a nice MacBook, and backing everything up, where else, but in the iCloud!

I have no idea why, but this painted a visual picture for me that is absolutely hilarious. I can just see someone civilly and calmly explaining to an inanimate object all of it’s faults and foibles…makes me laugh again just thinking about! I am definitely going to try this from now on!!! 🙂
 
Anyone ever watch the movie “Office Space?” Remember the scene where they take the printer out to the field? PC Load letter? :rotfl:

Haha! Yeah, my computer and I have many conversations, especially the work computer and I because it is cantankerous. I don’t know, it sounds a little crazy but it keeps me calm when I start to get frustrated. 😊
 
If we inspect ourselves deeply, there could be a sin of rebellion lurking within. The anger could be because things are not working our way, the way we think, we desire or we want. We are unable to accept delays, postponements, failures, losses or negative outcomes even if we think are allowed by God for a better purpose.

There could also be a psychological condition of being suppressed in childhood or other sad events that has led to bottling up the anger. God understands you, therefore, one need not be very guilty, esp. if this not within one’s conscious control. Repenting, nevertheless is a humble act of trust in God whenever you find yourself again and again falling into this condition (any condition for that matter).

The remedy is to consider this as a part of our old carnal person that does not deserve any attention, but to be crucified with Christ. Instead, let us daily put on the new nature of the resurrected Christ (willfully) and focus on Him and his divine character! It’s an exchange, we give up our natural body (filled with lusts and passions) for the divine body of Christ (filled with grace and power). Read and meditate Gal. 2:20 and other similar passages.

Keep in mind that it is through our Emotions that we give Satan the Key to destroy us.

LOL…I tend to get mad at objects more than humans!!!🙂 I actually have not felt any need to confess…actually…Fr. K…would likely stop me and say “Sorry , me Son…I thought ya ACTUALLY had a REAL confession!” 🙂 But he’s Irish! I am Texan of Irish Stock so…we think getting mad at stuff is matter of nature… aka…it’s an Irish thing!:):cool:
