Is it a sin to get angry with an inanimate object?

LOL…I tend to get mad at objects more than humans!!!🙂 I actually have not felt any need to confess…actually…Fr. K…would likely stop me and say “Sorry , me Son…I thought ya ACTUALLY had a REAL confession!” 🙂 But he’s Irish! I am Texan of Irish Stock so…we think getting mad at stuff is matter of nature… aka…it’s an Irish thing!:)
It is good to want to rid one’s soul of every sin, but some priests don’t have a lot of patience with pentitents who try to stone themselves to death with cotton balls.

I hope it isn’t because I do the same.😉
LOL.🙂 I can’t think of anything in Scripture or Catechism… or the Patristics…SO we who have lashed out at non-living/non-sacred…I think we are safe!🙂

It’s not a sin if you do not use God’s name in vain…

However with wayward golf balls or golf clubs that do not perform adequately when struck perfectly well, it is acceptable to swear and curse like a madman.

Same goes for bowling pins that remain standing when one has literally buried the ball in the pocket… more so when it happens multiple times in the same game.:D.

Of course it does not apply when it happens to an opponent or adversary. … then it’s a mortal sin.

Re: Golf balls. I actually saw, on some Catholic gift shop website, a novelty item that was a box of a dozen St. Anthony golf balls. I could use them, with my slice, which was put there by the evil one to tempt me to cuss like a sailor, especially when I miss a short putt!

I felt bad about the cussing while playing golf, and confessed this. I was shocked to find out that the priest does this, too. No, he didn’t share that fact with me in confession, I saw him )or rather, heard him) in the parish golf outing, but it was pretty tame cussing compared to what has been known to fly out of my mouth. I was in the same golf foursome with him, or I really should say, “foresome!” All of us were pretty bad, and I think only the Eighth Commandment kept us all from subtracting a few strokes on each hole in order to look like we were somewhat respectable!

As long as you aren’t offending others, I don’t see how it’s a problem.
I get frustrated with inanimate objects quite often myself.

If it is a computer, NO. A boat anchor, you are only hurting yourself because you forgot to tie the computer to the boat.

If we inspect ourselves deeply, there could be a sin of rebellion lurking within. The anger could be because things are not working our way, the way we think, we desire or we want. We are unable to accept delays, postponements, failures, losses or negative outcomes even if we think are allowed by God for a better purpose.

There could also be a psychological condition of being suppressed in childhood or other sad events that has led to bottling up the anger. God understands you, therefore, one need not be very guilty, esp. if this not within one’s conscious control. **Repenting, nevertheless is a humble act of trust in God whenever you find yourself again and again falling into this condition **(any condition for that matter).

The remedy is to consider this as a part of our old carnal person that does not deserve any attention, but to be crucified with Christ. Instead, let us daily put on the new nature of the resurrected Christ (willfully) and focus on Him and his divine character! It’s an exchange, we give up our natural body (filled with lusts and passions) for the divine body of Christ (filled with grace and power). Read and meditate Gal. 2:20 and other similar passages.
I have to agree here because I’m a grumpy German and I can be Helga the Horrible sometimes! :manvspc: :takethat: Confession does help me over time with my anger management - I need those graces! :o

Otherwise I have been known to slam a car door so hard I broke a part in the window, and inconvenienced my Dad to have it fixed, used bad words, snapped at people nearby, etc.

Also, it’s true that if we are constantly angry and hostile, it takes a toll on our blood pressure, immune system, cardiovascular risk, maybe can even cause cancer. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, so we don’t want to wreck our temples. :nope:

But when we can laugh at ourselves, that’s probably a positive thing, since it might help us take our hissy fits less seriously! :yup:

Sometimes yelling at a machine might be considered an example of righteous indignation. For example, you may be are waging a just war against an infernal device that may have attacked you with the Blue Screen of Death.

Although I haven’t had many issues with Windows 7 compared to previous releases…

The only real issue is whether you take that rage out on innocents nearby (i.e. family members, pets, tacos, etc).

The blue screen of death . . . or when it says there’s a fatal error or a crash or something awful and then you’re supposed to click “OK” - I think there should be other choices, such as:

“Not again!”
“I’d like a second opinion on that!”
“H— No, it’s not ‘OKAY’!!!”

etc.😃

RE: Yelling at the computer:
Sinful? Probably not.
Pointless? Probably.
Proclaiming truth? Probably 😃

Patience is a virtue that needs cultivation, particularly with computers.

Years ago, I was working on a riding lawnmower and let’s just say it wasn’t going well. While I didn’t utter any blasphemy or profanity, I did manage to yell at the thing, pick up one end and slam it down upside down. (Apparently, it’s true that adrenalin can render a human being much stronger than without it).

A guest arriving for a party next door saw me do this, and said to me “Well, that isn’t likely to fix it, is it?” and walked off.

I did manage to summon up whatever patience and temperance was left inside me and restrained myself from tossing her in the creek.

I learned not to throw tools as well, having lost a wrench in the creek that I threw in there while working on…wait for it…the very same riding mower a couple weeks earlier.

@ Newbie—Maybe God inspired man to develop the computer as some sort of nefarious means to teach humanity patience and perseverance!

😃

Prior to that, it was the introduction of the internal combustion engine. 😉

Let’s not forget, either, the hundreds of cartoons over the decade with the “golf club twisted up like a pretzel” motif. :nunchuk: “Take THAT!”

But yeah, the lady had a point about the lawnmower . . . :o Some of us have our moments just like me with the car door.

Maybe a person only yells at the machine because he doesn’t have access to the software engineers.

Haha, good one!

I do remember in my eighth grade morality book we learned this: “It is not a sin to get angry. What we decide to do with our anger, however, can be sinful.”
