Is it a sin to leave daily Mass early?

One of my classes ended early, so I decided to go to the daily Mass at the National Basilica. I wasn’t dressed appropriately for Mass, though, so I decided to leave after the homily was over. (I didn’t leave for any important reason beyond this.)

Was this sinful?

No, not at all. Daily mass is not a requirement. There would be no sin if you didn’t go at all. So how could leaving early be a sin? Unless you made a disruptive spectacle of yourself, which I highly doubt

Daily masses are not obligatory. So there was no obligation to fulfill. If you left reverently and quietly, I wouldnt see a problem. But I think I would have stayed. I am a nurse and I have went to mass wearing scrubs.

You were already there, so why not stay? If you felt that your clothing was not appropriate, why go?
Once you are there, leaving early wasn’t going to change the clothing issue. You didn’t sin by leaving, but why go at all if there was a question of appropriate clothing to start with?

I wasn’t thinking about it until after I had gotten my pew. There was also a bishop from India there, and I didn’t want to convey any disrespect to his excellency by going to a Mass in old jeans and a t-shirt.

It would also depend on why you had to leave.

I’m dependent on public transportation, and on Holy Thursday things got started late. I had to leave after Communion or I wouldn’t have caught the last bus that would take me home.

No, but the Mass is like a movie, the concentration is the climax. If you leave half way though, you don’t know the end. I was raised like this, and I don’t leave mass until the priest has left, and I’ve spent time in prayer. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think you get the grace on the indulgences unless you stay the whole time.

Not really, no - people would have assumed that you had to go back to work or school.

I think this kind of points out the need to dress well every day, though, even when we aren’t making plans to do anything in particular, so that you can suddenly take a notion in your head to go to Mass, and feel comfortable there, without worrying about what others are thinking.

I normally can’t go to daily Mass. Today was an exception because one of my classes let out around a half hour early, so it didn’t occur to me.

That’s exactly what I mean - when you were dressing for the day, it didn’t occur to you that you might want to attend Mass, or that the opportunity would arise.

The situation illustrates why we should always strive to dress our best, even when we don’t have anything on our agenda that might seem to require it.

Heck, you might mistakenly get a higher grade, just because you look smart. Couldn’t have that, now, could we.
