Is it a sin to miss mass and take communion?

Our local priest sums it up beautifully…

When the cats away, the mice will play.

Very true words indeed. The longer you stay away the more you are going to play.

Pretty simple really.

ANYONE who misses an OBLIGATION day. Must not take communion on their next visit unless they have been to confession.

Communion is sacred, so respect it at all times.

Many catholics have No idea missing just one obligation day means they have become unclean and need to become clean again.

Harsh I know. But that’s what every Catholic signed up for.

You wouldn’t see a loving Muslim disrespect Ramadam or prayer.

To be more precise, missing Mass on an “obligation day” without good reason is gravely sinful. Sometimes it just isn’t possible to attend Mass. Under those circumstances, there is no sin because there is no obligation. God does not require the impossible of us.

If someone can’t be bothered or lacks the correct reason not to enter mass on the Lords Holy days they have made themself unclean. Not God.

If you cannot attend because of a real good reason then that is different.

Under what circumstances?

Be carful because I know sick people who are wheeled in to Churches.

If able You Must attend.

If impossible pyshically that’s different.

People say I was on holiday and couldn’t go… That is not an excuse because many countries have churches.

I agree, and only commented for the benefit of those who might not know what the Church requires because your original post did not contain the “without good reason” bit.
Under what circumstances?
The immediate examples that came to mind were hospitalization, incarceration, and catastrophic weather emergency.

This is great for those who can but not all people who are that ill are able to do this. They do not sin by not attending Mass.

Of course being on vacation is not in itself an excuse for not going to Mass.

Look, I don’t disagree with what you said. I was only adding a missing element for the benefit of those who might not be aware of it.

God bless.

Simple. Go to the book. See what the Church teaches and never go past that, especially if you are telling others what they should do.

2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor.

No Catholic has authority to lay on any other burden. That is what Jesus condemned the Pharisees for. Note that serious reason is not defined, and only two examples are given. Even illness is not listed as serious illness. While this might lend itself to abuse in some cases, at very least the slight would not be mortally sinful, as full consent of the will would be absent, and possibly full knowledge.

It is best to take this precept strictly for oneself, but not to judge another. If one is in doubt for oneself, talk to the priest. I did. He said he would dispense me from my obligation so not to worry about what the line of serious reason was. He knows I never miss if I can reasonably make it, even if traveling or under the weather.

Ok excellent, sounds like you’ve got it sorted. Sunday is mandatory to attend mass, every other day is optional but a nice thing to do if you can.

In your circumstances, with possible transportation issues, it would probably be worth it to talk with a priest about it. It sounds like you have just enough to maybe be beyond our ability to steer you on. But as far as the overall rule Sunday’s (the Saturday vigil or late evening, is included as an option to fulfill the Sunday obligation) are always mandatory.

Best regards my friend.

Great! If you watched the priest on youtube say this you can share which video it was.

So the church gives us some excellent examples ( illness, care of infants or released by their priest/pastor ).

So was I right then? Regarding holidays.

I have not read the book but I only know because our local priest told us.

It’s very important to attend all obligation days (which includes Mass each weekend).

That is not me judging others.

Some folk go to mass on a Sunday for instance and take the Eucharist. But then do not attend a Holy Day midweek obligation due to whatever reason (outside examples of the book).

Then take Eucharist on a following Sunday Mass.

But they have made them self unclean to except the Eucharist no one else. So need to go to confession.

Many Catholic’s don’t know this.

Many things I and other Catholic’s do not know about our Faith.

Which make us unclean in God’s eyes.

This is why Jesus gave his Apostles (Church) authority to forgive Sin.

The Church doesn’t always force certain rules.

Sadly for me to many Rules have changed in my own opinion over the 2000 years. Which should be forced but that’s another topic.

A person with mortal sin should go to mass, just not to Holy Communion. Prayer and attendance at mass will dispose you to making a good confession and then you would be able to recieve Holy Communion worthily.

… and the reason is because I go to Mass from Mondays to Fridays.
That does not fulfill your obligation. You must physically attend Mass on Sundays or Saturday evening. No other days fulfill the obligation.

Joe, give the guy a break. If he is a Protestant revert, that was the fourth for the protestors. They number them different. (then turn around and say the CC changed them) LOL! Happy Thanksgiving!
