Is it a sin to not take my meds?

Hi everyone. Is it a sin to not take my medicine? My doctor has me on anti-depressants and one other medication. I don’t like to take them however and haven’t been taking them for over a month. So, I was just wondering, is not taking my medication sinful? Could it be mortally or gravely sinful? 🤷
Why don’t you want to take your meds?
If it’s due to side effects, confront your doctor and try to get on other meds or your dosage reduced. Otoh, if you don’t want to take them because you think they’re a sign that you’re sick, get back on them!

I’m epileptic & I’ve been on meds almost my whole life & still, every so often I go off my pills & wind up having a grand mal.

I know having to take pills every day stinks but I try to be thankful that there are meds for my condition.

God bless. Btw, here are the patron saints against depression.

The reason why I don’t like to take my medicine is I hate constantly forgetting to take them. I hate the hassle of taking them.

I understand what you’re saying. Thanks for your advice.

That said, I have borderline personality disorder, major depression, and anxiety disorder. When I don’t take my medicine, I often feel suicidal multiple times per week, especially during stressful times.

As for not wanting to take my medicine, it’s not because of side effects or anything like that. It’s just that I don’t like the hassle of trying to remember to take them all the time.
This is scary. Please take your medications. You are an adult, and it is your responsibility to do so, just like brushing your teeth and remembering to shower.

There are many things in this world we don’t like to do, but in order to live a good and productive life, we still do them. My Mom has Alzheimers, and we put her pills out each morning and each night. Maybe get a daily pill divider and keep it on your bathroom counter so that its there and you see it when you are doing your other daily hygienic things?

I think you would feel worse if you hurt yourself, or possibly someone else, all because it was “too much of a hassle”. Please try not to put yourself in this situation, and if you still feel after hearing everyone’s advice that it’s a hassle, PLEASE contact your therapist or any therapist, as well as your doctor.

I’m kind of in a quandary right now. I think I might be pregnant and I don’t want to take my medicine because I’m afraid it might harmfully affect my baby if I am indeed pregnant. What should I do? 🤷
Holly where is your husband in all this? Does he know you have not been taking your meds?

If you think you might be pregnant why not take a home pregnancy test? If money is an issue you can get HPTs at any “dollar” store. They usually keep them behind the counter so you have to ask. Their generic brands are made by the same companies that make the name brand. I’ve heard they are even the same tests. 🙂

If your doctor has you on medication it is a good idea to take them regularly. Many of them build up in your system and do little good if not taken regularly.

Holly,
I have PTSD with reactive psychosis. I have been on major amounts of meds to control my depression, the psychosis, and suicidal thoughts. For the first two years after my breakdown, I would constantly “forget” to take my meds. I HATED needing my meds. I hated taking them. I hated forgetting them. I hated the whole idea that I was sick.
Fast forward to now two years later, and I am taking my meds religiously every day/evening. My doctor has cut me down on several of the meds. I take everything EXACTLY the way I am supposed to.
I feel fantastic…no more depression, no more frightening hallucinations or delusions. I know it is because that I am taking care of my body by taking my meds, and it is also the grace of God.
I know what you are going through. But, take your meds and go to your shrink (if you have one). Believe it or not, it DOES get easier.

I don’t have a husband. I’ve never been married. My ex-boyfriend and I had (unprotected) sex when I went to visit him and now I’m worrying that I might be pregnant. :(😊 Sorry, I had to be honest and clear up your misconception concerning what is going on with me… I am really ashamed of what I did and have went to confession though.

Praise God! The could be father and I are now friends again! :extrahappy::extrahappy::extrahappy:

Holly,

I want to offer a little extra perspective about not taking your meds. I have Tourette’s Syndrome and Aspergers Syndrome, so I’ve been on meds since I was six years old. It took almost ten years to find the right combination of medication to help me get along. I’m currently on a medication for anxiety and another for depression/OCD. Sometimes I really hate taking medication too, but the shift in my personality is enough to keep me taking them. And if I forget a dose, I can feel the difference myself. Unfortunetly, the people around me also have to suffer from it, because I can become argumenative and sometimes quite a little witch when I’ve missed a dose or am late. So I feel I have a responsibility not just to myself to keep healthy, but also to my parents (whom I live with) and my friends to keep on my meds so I’m not hurting their feelings or disrespecting them inadvertently.

Just a thought. I’m a little tired, so I hope it marke sense. 🙂

No offense, hun, but that might have something to do with you having sex with him. Men can be jerks that way. 😦

I’m like 600 miles away from him. We have not had sex since I went to visit him a few weeks ago. Besides, as a conservative and devout Catholic, I would not have premarital sex again. I wasn’t a practicing Catholic at the time that we did have sex.

Also, I just contacted an on call doctor and they told me that if there is a possibility that I am pregnant that I should not take my anti-depressants so I am not going to take them until I find out whether or not I am pregnant this week or the next.

Ummm no offense but I don’t see what it is so scary about it all. I am no danger to other people when I don’t take my medicine. If anything, I am only a danger to myself when I don’t take my medicine. And yes, I know that I am an adult and that it is my responsibility to take my medicine. You don’t have to talk to me like I am a child.

Believe me I can understand that, but aren’t the consequences of not taking them even worse? Please get back on them and stay on them!

Yes, you are right. The consequences of not taking them are even worse. However, I am not going to take my medicine again until I find out whether or not I am pregnant because I do not want to harm any potential baby that I may have inside of me.

Anyway, I’m going to bed now. Goodnight.

Holly, you are quite right not to take the meds while possibly pregnant if advised not to by a doctor or other professional.

And while I appreciate that you, as you say, don’t want to be talked to as if you were a child, it is necessary to point out that you have said that your ‘side effects’ of not taking the medicine include suicidal thoughts. And you seem by your last few posts not to appreciate that your potential suicide would indeed be a ‘danger’ to others, it could severely impact or even basically destroy their lives.

I have friends whose father attempted (unsuccessfully thank God) to take his life, so I know it. And your being in a suicidal frame of mind almost certainly a ‘danger’ to them in the same way too, even without any actual attempts at suicide.

To say so is not treating you as a child, it is treating you as I would treat anyone who appears not to understand the implications of an action they are taking.

I’m sorry. I guess I simply did not realize or consider at the time the reality of the danger of it to other people. What I meant by not harming other people was that I am not a physical harm to other people though. In other words, just because I am not taking my medicine, I am not going to go out and murder someone or something. Not taking my medicine does not have that kind of side effect.

I am also sorry that I thought you were talking to me like a child. I sincerely felt that you were talking to me like a child at the time that I read your post and I was even hesitant to respond to it. For that and the other thing in the above paragraph, I ask for your forgiveness.

Also, every time I do have suicidal thoughts, I call the suicide hotline so that I am not a danger to myself. Sometimes I even go to the hospital if the thoughts are severe enough. But anyway, thank you for your concern.

Changing religion and going from pro-life to strongly pro-choice every couple of hours is a showing that a person is very unstable. This is caused by not taking medication or going on and off medication. The brain never gets a chance to react to the medication.

We all have a responsibility towards our own health.

Even when I was taking my medicines consistently and had been taking them for months, I was still what you call unstable. I have told my doctor about this and it seems that there is nothing that they can do. I sure wish there was something they could do though.
