Is it a sin to punch the pillow?

There are some times, when I get quite angry at home, where you can feel it the blood surging through your veins like your gonna explode. Doing something like giving the pillow a few pounds helps to let some of that out. But is that right? Keeping all that anger in isn’t very healthy, I don’t think.

??

It’s not a sin to punch the pillow, but there are more constructive things one can do. Take a walk, do some yard work, mop the floor, go running.
It has been found in studies, if I remember correctly, that letting anger out just helps fuel more. The best thing to do is learn to express anger appropriately. I had to work with my son on this for years.
These are the degrees of anger we worked out. He started at #1 and now he’s down to 5 and 6.
1.Hitting someone: not acceptable
2.Throwing or breaking things, better than #1 but not good.
3.Screaming and cursing - better still.
4.Yelling in anger without bad words.
5.Yelling at the person or situation you’re angry about.
6.Talking calmly to the person you’re angry at, and trying to reach agreement about what to do about the problem – best of all.

You might want to think about why you’re so angry. Life isn’t fair, for sure, but Catholics have to remember that God makes everything work out for our good. We should be thanking Him for whatever happens.
Hope this helps.

Mmm… I love my pillow. I don’t see much of it these days. I can’t imagine hitting it. It’s so soft and innocent… like a little lamb… only not.

I’d say that punching your pillow is really pretty harmless (it’s a good thing that they’re inanimate)… especially if you’ve let yourself get too upset for level-headed discussion with the offending party.

It’s best to not get upset in the first place (as Viki said). Failing that though, giving the little sack of fluffy goodness a few smacks to cool your temper may be the next best thing. Then, after you’ve cooled off, attempt to mend whatever hurt was caused when you got mad. 🙂

God bless,

Agricola

Dear friend,
This is a serious, serious sin and you must repent, go to confession ,and never, ever abuse a poor defenseless pillow again. Really, I’m shocked to even read about this

Go get yourself a heavy bag & take your aggression out on it. Good exercise.

I concur. Such a pillow-punching impulse is seriously disturbed. Seek help. 😛

You took the words right out of my mouth, Viki. I remember from my studies that hitting things, like a pillow or a punching bag, is not actually the catharsis we once thought it was. Performing an act of violence - on anything - doesn’t actually release the anger; rather, it inflames it. It’s much better to get in some healthy exercise, or listen to beautiful music, or express one’s feelings rationally to the other party.

You know, just the other night I could feel the blood surging through my veins. For a moment, I actually did think I would explode. I thought maybe it was a bad clam or something, but now I know:

Stylus was quite angry. At home.

Thanks for clearing that up!

…I don’t get it. 😦
