Is it sinful in and of itself to purchase condoms? I’m imagining a scenario in which they are not used for contraceptive purposes.

What else would it be used for? They don’t really have any other practical function do they? But no, I don’t think it is a sin just to buy them. It’s a sin to use them. But, it may cause scandal to buy them. But I guess that would only be if anyone who knew you were Catholic knew you bought them.

You use them to put over the barrel of rifles to keep the sand out when you are hunting.

I feel kinda dumb, but knowing nothing about rifles, I don’t know if you’re being serious or sarcastic. eta: please don’t feel like I’m thinking you’re rude though. I just don’t get it.

I would guess it’s not a sin to buy them, but it would put you in an occasion of sin.

Yes I am being serious.

During WWII many soldiers used the condoms they were issued to keep dirt out of their barrels. I have seen veterans still do this today.

Off of wikipedia
Because condoms are waterproof, elastic, and durable, they are also used in a variety of secondary applications. These range from creating waterproof microphones to protecting rifle barrels from clogging.

Aparently, “anti-rape” “condoms” exist. it was mentioned on the wiki page, and they gave a link: antirape.co.za/
What do you think of this concept? I am not sure what to make of it. It doesn’t even seem practical. Do they suggest that women buy one and wear it all the time, on the off chance someone rapes them? And the victim still gets raped even with it. It just functions to hurt him so he’ll stop. idk.
(This is probably considered off-topic, but i’m not sure it deserves its own new thread)

I don’t know… it sounds sort of dumb if you ask me. It would be like never leaving the house without wearing a bullet proof vest just in case somebody tries to shoot you? I think it’s a better idea to avoid situations where some creep might try to rape you… like never take a ride from someone you don’t know really well & trust and don’t walk alone down dark streets at night. NOT that I’m suggesting a rape victim brings it upon herself … that’s not it at all… I just think there are things women can do which might help to keep them from harm’s way more than wearing anti-rape condoms? 🤷

Ahem…I speak as one with a fair amount of knowledge of both condoms and firearms (before you condemn me, remember I was a Protestant).

Using condoms to protect the barrel of a rifle is a bad idea.
  1. It would trap moisture and lead to rust. A soldier is trained in the importance of keeping her/his weapon clean and oiled. Better to do a little maintenance each night than to risk corrosion of the barrel.
  2. Most modern condoms are lubricated. See point number one about moisture. Many lubes are spermicidal and corrosive to the point where they can eat the paint off a bedside table (don’t ask how I know). That is about the last thing you want on/in your rifle.
  3. Unless you have a very big rifle-no snickering; I mean the metal and wood kind-a condom is going to fit loosely. Are you planning on using a ribbon or yarn to keep it in place?
  4. If you’re really dead set on protecting the barrel, it would be cheaper and easier to use plastic wrap, as in the kitchen stuff.
Using condoms on a rifle for hunting is totally unneeded. I’ve hunted for most of my life and have spent very little time crawling through the mud with such urgency that I couldn’t keep my rifle clear of the muck. Makes me wonder what the heck your’re hunting?

Finally, if I was pinned down in the mire by some hostile squirrels or rabbits, I’d worry much more about getting the dirt in the action of my rifle where it would likely cause a jam. Would have to be one, big, condom to protect from tip of the barrel to the back of the action.

ps. It is absolutely impossible to post about condoms and rifles without all sorts of double entendre!

I have seen a high school science project conducted concerning the reliability in the face of the ‘safe sex’ advocated by the popular media.
They ended up buying several hundred.

I don’t think it’s a sin to buy them at all. They actually have several D-I-Y uses. Plus I am sure they make fun balloons for bachelorette parties! 🙂

Plus there are novelty ones that I have heard of people buying for the interesting, ah, “twist” they can put on things (with the end cut out of course).

BWHAHAHA! I never said I used them. I was merely pointing out that some people do use them.

I am not going to correct a veteran doing it out of nostalgia. Heck they even used them in Viet Nam.

Yea, exactly.

As an avid hunter I agree with one exception. When I am using a black powder rifle and it is in a wet environment like it was when I was hunting this year (God could not make up His mind between rain and snow), I cut a finger off a latex exam glove and put it over the muzzle. I also put melted wax over the capped nipple. I have only done this once. I usually hunt with an M-14 when I am in adverse weather which it would be hard to gunk up enough to stop it from functioning.

I have hunted for years without getting sand in my barrel, but if I thought it would be a problem a balloon would be much cheaper.

If they’re not going to be used for contraception but instead are going to be used to keep the barrel of your gun from getting wet as an example, then no, it would not be a sin. At least I don’t think so. If I am wrong then someone please correct me. I am pretty sure that it’s only a sin when you intend to use them for a contraceptive. That said, I personally wouldn’t buy them because it might pose a sin of scandal for others. I’d find another way to protect the barrel of my gun. 😉

Good point. Never having tried black powder, I didn’t think of that.

Thanks!

Yes but they have things that look like mini condoms that are specifically for black powder rifles. I have always just used a finger off an exam glove. Someone else on here mentioned using a balloon. I have never even handled a condom so I don’t know this for sure, but it would have to be an awfully small condom to have a tight fit over the barrel. Just going on my knowledge as a male of what a condom is supposed to go over, not even my thickest barreled weapon matches up.🤷

A guy who lived on my floor in college worked at a drug store part time and brought in a couple of cases of date-expired condoms.

Having nothing to do that weekend, we blew them up and filled his suitemate’s room with them.

Another good use for which they were not intended. 😃
