My point is anything can take our focus away from God and family, not just fantasy literature.

Sports is one example.

Alright. I thought you were making an implication that I disagreed somehow. Forgive me.

Anything that ends up seriously detracting from your responsibilities as a spouse, parent, worker, student, or private individual is sinful. St Alphonsus Liguori, in his treatise on prayer, put it bluntly that abandoning a small child in order to go to Mass would be a mortal sin.

Because obsessive fandom is a real thing in life, this level of fandom can be sinful depending on the impact it has on the person’s life. I remember as a teenager, I preferred fantasy worlds over real life (which seemed so mundane and dull in comparison), and in retrospect, I’m positive that this was not spiritually healthy for me.

Literature (fiction or non-fiction) that promotes and glorifies sinful behavior (anything against the Great Commandment) is also problematic, and this applies whether you’re an adult or a child. Having been both a teacher and an administrator I would be the first to tell you that children and adults are all one in the same.

All that being said, fantasy and science fiction is good in of itself because it is a reflection and imitation of the Divine Will to create. Art is the grandchild of God. It’s just our human concupiscence has a tendency to screw things up.

Read:
  1. Weeping May Tarry, Lester Del Rey
  2. Chronicles of Narnia, particularly Lion Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Final Battle, by CS Lewis
  3. anything by JRR Tolkien
and come back and ask.

(The first is particularly interesting and fascinating, as it’s the only Christian Science Fiction novel I’ve ever found. I’ve also seen a single short story. Christian Fantasy is quite common)

Beacuse some christian say that everything that comes from Fantasy is from the devil him self
Well, that’s just a fantasy. It’s a dark one, but it’s still a fantasy.
Sports is one example.
Especially since Sunday is now the NFL’s day. They even have special “feast” days, like the annual Lions game on Thanksgiving.
You do realise that we have jobs and stuff to do?
I get around that by browsing the forums at work.

Edit: I don’t often respond, though. I tend to do it on my phone, and posting replies on mobile is a pain.
