This was originally normal thread but I decided to make a poll out of it. Is it a sin to cuss/curse/say bad words/say swear words/say four letter words?

This does not include blasphemy because that’s too obvious. 🤷

I’d say it depends and is not a completely black and white issue.

But I do think that most of the time, yes, it would be. But not allll the time.

A lot depends on intention too.

I voted “yes and I don’t cuss”.

Technically speaking, words in and of themselves aren’t sinful, but their meaning. Since swear words are profane and vulgar and do not dignify ourselves or others. We are created in the image and likeness of God, we were not made to use words like that.

I suppose some words are in a “grey” area, but especially words like s*** and f*** are sinful to use.

Hope that helps!

I’m not sure. When I was younger, I used to confess cussing because my Mom told me not to. I guess I kind of look at where it is directed. If I stub my toe and let out an exclamation, or use the literal meaning of a swear word instead of the ‘proper’ term for it, that’s one thing in my book. However, directing them at someone can cause them harm, and isn’t being charitable towards one’s neighbor, so in that light I could see it as a venial sin.

Followingtheway, iv noticed your doing alot of poles recently, though i do really like poles there fun. 🍿

I would no, but i mean not a mortal sin, unless you curse at GOD, but then that becomes blasphemy (i think) or if you use GOD’s name in a damning way.

unfortunatly i let it slip sometimes. not at other people thank GOD.

Cursing is a disgusting habit, and I’m ashamed to say I do it more than I should.

It’s not a mortal sin, but it’s probably venial.

I never do it around women and children.

Be honest man. You’d be the first person I’ve met who fishes and doesn’t cuss! 😉
I used to have a very strict personal rule to never ever ever cuss. I was actually really good about it for a while and didn’t cuss for a few years, but recently I’ve been slipping up a bit. Especially if I’m alone or just with my husband and get frustrated about something random. :o

Funny story (depending on your perspective) -

One day, I came out to my truck and realized it wouldn’t start. I was having alot of trouble with it, and after several attempts, it started. I then immediately got stuck in my driveway. I lost it, and used some words that would make a mechanic blush with shame.

About three hours later, my next door neighbor asked me if I could watch my language. I forgot that **she operates a daycare and they were outside playing ** during my truck incident.

:o

I don’t see how using a swear word, in and of itself, could be sinful since the classification thereof is 100% culturally dependent. Either it’s sinful to talk about sexual intercourse and defication or it isn’t, and you cannot say word choice mitigates it.

Now swearing at someone could be sinful, but that wouldn’t necessarily be due to the choice of words. It would be the act of harming one’s fellow man.
