Is it a sin to say the S word?

I do not think it is a sin in itself. It is not blasphemy, so the word is morally neutral. Society assigns value to it. It may be a sin if you were using it to hurt someone though.

I confess that I cussed and the priests have never said it was or wasn’t a sin.

If you think that you should and that it is the right thing to do, then yes, confess it.

As I said before, vulgarity in itself is not sinful but it also isn’t the most noble thing to do. But then again, how is saying “bananas!” or “manure occureth” or “shoot!” really any different from employing the “s” word as an ejaculation? As in many things, it isn’t the word that makes it wrong but the intention behind it.

I believe that vulgar words (and its ever present companion, vulgar thoughts) are the windows that let in all of the other vices. I try not to use them but as is so often in this world, I fail. I still do not, however, believe that the employment of such terms is an occurrence of sin.
Have been waiting for someone to say this!! Balderdash and bunkum! To utter some kind of exclamation when eg you hit your thumb with a hammer, or your car boot vomits shopping all over a wet car park is NORMAl and HEALTHY,

If you cannot see the difference between bananas and manure? ( cannot believe I just said that!!) then you got problems,

The issue and “sin” here if there be any is vulgarity and in many case sexual innuendo, the f word being of prime useage here in Ireland…

There is no vulgarity in expressing extreme pain or frustration or shock, Bananas is grand.

Mind you I have been delighted that twice when I saw a car heading towards me and known that nothing could avoid a head on crash, the only word I could say was JESUS, and even more so that when I faced the errant driver all I could call him was STUPID…

There is no vulgarity in expressing sudden pain. There is in using profanity. I choose my words carefully for that reason.

Utter nonsense.

Words are not magical incantations. Substituting “bananas” for the “s” word doesn’t not mitigate the anger, bitterness, meanness or whatever is the goad for the exclamation in the first place. If one replaces the seven words you can’t say on television with your silly examples when dealing with an irate person and you say it with the same anger and meanness, then it is the same as if you used the original foul words.

Instead of intentionally and purposely calling a woman a “b*tch” one should intentionally and purposely call her a “female dog,” then how does that absolve you from being uncharitable? It is the intention behind our actions that makes sin. This trend of trying to legally parse morality like lawyers do in a court of law is simply an attempt to circumvent responsibility.

What words are considered vulgar, vary according to culture.

Bloody, is vulgarity across the pond, but nothing here.

Jesus warning about idle words is about words that cause harm, despite the person carelessness in using them.

He’s not talking about the S word when a person accidentally smashes his finger with a hammer when banging in a nail.

Jim
May sound irreverent but as Jesus trained as a carpenter having Joseph to teach Him He must have accidenatlly bashed his thumb occasionally…

I think too that there is a confusion between private non filthy .non vulgar expletives ie not the s word ever, and abusing people with bad language. I have never ever used any expletives against anyone and never would. Last week in the car park when the shopping fell over the wet ground, BANANAS came out just in frustration and the lady next to me burst out laughing which helped us both mightily…

All reminds me of a verse that used to be popular when school girls had a craze for autograph albums… “If upon a wasp you sit, Do not yell or have a fit but simply murmur,. I am bit…”,

I hate the s word and all the f words etc…

Any foul language is a sin. Its impossible to imagine a Saint saying such words. In Heaven this type of language would not exist… But in hell it would. Why make yourself sound like a devil?
How do you know that the devil cusses using normal foul language? You presented a fascist view on foul language. I once read a story about Pope John XXIII and how he once used the s-word. He is a saint. You seem to be implying that the Bill of Rights can go to hell.
