Is it a sin to watch South Park and play violent video games?

First I want to say that these shows and games do NOT at all influence my behavior. I completely understand that they are fiction and use them for entertainment purposes only. I still believe the Jesus is my savior and these things have not made my faith waiver one inch. If you have ever watched South Park and can get past all of the vulgar, blasphemous and outrageous things they do, it usually has a good message at the end.

They usually have a good message.

I watch it regularly with my boys.

As long as you can tell fiction from real life (which most people can!), you will be fine.

(This applies to the video games as well).

You could be spending time in a more effective way. God gave you this time and all the material around you to begin with. He also setup situations for you to strive to holiness.

The devil wants you to be filled with tv, video games, sports, anything but holiness.

When your time is up and the lights here on earth go dim for you, do you believe your creator will say to you, “Well done my good and faithful servant. Enter into the Kingdom of My Father’s house.”

Eternity is a great prize. Why take a chance and let it slip away.

yes, we must ONLY and ALWAYS fill ALL of our time with NOTHING but religious material……if it is not containing an official Church stamp, it is evil and to be avoided at all cost.

No TV, no sports, no computer, no fun…Life is to be ENDURED, not ENJOYED.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Thank you all for the answers!

I see valid points made on both sides. I believe that with moderation you can enjoy certain aspects of life that may not glorify god, but aren’t sinful either. None of these things detract from my faith in the Lord and I still attend mass and read spiritual texts such as the Bible.

I have to think that Jesus also enjoyed some form of entertainment while walking the Earth. We just don’t hear about it because it really is irrelevant to our faith.

God put us hear so we could glorify him, but I also believe he would want us to enjoy the wonderful gift of life that he gave us.

This is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.

God Bless 🙂

I don’t know about the violent games, but I do have something to say about South Park and other mocking, blasphemous shows like it.

How could anything that fails to show the reverence due to God be “entertaining”? You want to ignore the all the irreverence in a show devoted to bashing religion, particularly Christianity, to get to the “good message in the end”? There is in my opinion an inherent contradiction here…You say that you still believe that Jesus is your savior, and yet you are willing to watch shows as entertainment that deride and deny Him. I’m sure you love your parents, and if people made fun of them, you wouldn’t be willing to watch it or call it “entertainment”. How would you feel about that? I personally don’t know what faith it is that acknowledges the power and love of God and yet still excuses vicious attacks on such without being moved to indignation and disgust.

jesus got nailed not for us to have fun, but for us to complain about things which don’t interfere with our life in any way, such as creative shows like south park, which has what some would say, ‘‘better’’, or ‘‘more intelligent’’ points of view and morals than the bible, but by no means it is holier, nor does it require more belief without any evidence, and it doesn’t even condone molestation or slavery? what are these people watching south park, crazy? I insist on us catholics getting together and banning this show, because I for one don’t want to have to raise my kids, tv has an absolute obligation to do it for me, am i right fellaz?

I do not think that SP has better morals or points of view than the Bible. The Bible is where we get answers for all of lifes questions and problems. I also do not believe that young kids should watch this show. If the kid is still being brought up , and thus impressionable, then the parent should not use this to get them off the hook of parenting. This show should only be for adults who have a firm grasp on their faith and morals and can watch a show without it corrupting their brain.

Now, whether its moral or not, that is your choice. I just wanted to make clear that I am not at all putting a show before the teachings of Jesus Christ and I am not belittling him dying on the cross by finding some enjoyment and fun in life. He made the ultimate sacrifice.

Just my 2 cents
