if one prays to God for herself/himself. Because, someone was telling me that it is sinful to pray to God if you are praying for yourself. I was not sure if that is exactly what she meant, but I found it odd, because I know we should be praying for others, but can’t we pray for ourselves too if we want something?? When she said that, i feel like sometimes i am being selfish by asking God for something.
 
Your friend is mistaken. How else are we to bring our needs before God? Jesus prayed to the Father, for Himself, in Gethsemane. The Our Father, which Jesus taught us to pray is filled with personal appeals to God for our needs, for protection from evil, and so on.
