Is it a sin..?

I found that someone on craigslist was selling a blackberry, which I had been looking for, for a good price. So, I bought it from the person. But, now I am thinking what if it was stolen and sold to me? Would that mean I am stealing too?? I don’t know if it was stolen, but im just thinking.
 
You bought it innocently and in good faith.

However, if you’d questioned its origins beforehand and suspected it was a good deal because it was stolen property and bought it anyway, then you’d be participating in theft.

No, I actually did not suspect it at all. But, than I thought about it, because this person is a stranger so I have no idea what they did. I mean I don’t think it was stolen, but I am not sure and I don’t want to feel bad about it.
 
A lot of times on Craigslist items people sell can be on their 2nd or 3rd owner.

You didn’t know for sure if the item was stolen. No harm, no foul. You didn’t know. Even if it was stolen it’s not your fault.

However, if you really think the item was stolen, you can always take it in to the cops. However, even if it was its unlikely it will get back to the original owner.

I don’t know for sure if it was, but just wondering that if it was, because I never know. But, thanks

Yeah, like I said I wouldn’t worry about it. But if you really do want to know sometimes people report stolen items to the police with a device serial number (rare) and sometimes they can get it back to them. Again, I wouldn’t worry about it. 👍
 
Morally, you clearly didn’t intend anything. Legally, however, receiving stolen property can be a crime even if you didn’t realize it was stolen when you purchased it. The chances of it being stolen aren’t great–blackberry curve was the highest selling phone last year, and theres a lot of them circulating around. But you could check with police–if they say bug off, at least you will have some defense if it later turns out to be stolen.
 
Craigslist and Ebay, too.

I wonder how much stuff is sold on Ebay that just a month ago “fell off the back of a truck and was found in a ditch somewhere”.

I bought a couple of sump pumps for a good price a while back, and it was from an individual who sold odds and ends. The though occured to me after I bought them, who has TEN brand new sump pumps lying around to sell on eBay?

I dunno; you do your best to determine it something is stolen or not, but sometimes you can never be 100% sure.
