I know that taking the name of the Lord in vain is a sin. What about saying words like “****” in a time of extreme stress? If this is a sin, which commandment is being broken? I know it is impolite language to be sure (and I have used it on occasion:o ), but a sin?

I hope someone replies with more authority on the subject…I am not. I have always believed it to be a sin…can’t tell you why.
To me being impolite is sinful…not respecting others.
Sorry I can’t be of more help but IMO by saying the slang swear words…you are still breaking a commandment…probably the 2nd or the 5th.

Frankly, I think cussing should be avoided. Sinful?

You have to remember the elements that have to be present for anything to be a sin. First, you must understand it is a sin.

Cussing while not a mortal sin in itself could be a venial sin. It has to do with the respect do to others, and this kind of language can be offensive to others. Now if you stand in a room by yourself and cuss up a storm where no one else can hear. It’s still a bad habit.
