Is it acceptable for a Mormon to learn about the Catholic church, but still not want to join?

G, my super conservative LDS parents were the same, that is, I had non member friends.

There is something in Mormonism that makes more than a few people become insular. Certainly I don’t think that so many come up with that idea, or approach, on their own. There is something in Mormonism that fosters it.

I was wrong! Patrick Madrid did not become prominent in the 1970’s. Thank you for the correction.
I didn’t know much about him until the 2000’s and didn’t meet him (briefly) until sometime around 2007.

Sounds like a cult sort of? Jehovahs Witnesses are the same way.

Is it considered disrespectful for me to continue to study the Catholic church and understand it better, but choose not to join because I believe in what the LDS church teaches?
We see Mormon missionaries at Mass every once in awhile. About half the time, they take the Eucharist which would be the only disrespectful thing. Catholicism is a beautiful religion and a smart religion, which means you could study it and be amazed by its beauty for years. I’ve been to Mass is countries where I did not understand a word, but it was the same as the Mass in my hometown; beautiful.
The Eucharist is the center of Catholic worship and it has the same meaning for us today as it did for the earliest Christians. I can see why the Mormons would be draw to it. They just need to know the truth of it. Keep studying.

I’m sorry for posting this thread. I didn’t know that it’d lead to arguments. I should’ve thought before I posted on here.

Never be sorry for posting a thread like this. Any thread about the LDS vs Catholic will always get a bit heated. If you have questions, please ask them.

I personally didn’t mean to post this thread with intention of causing any arguments between anybody.

Please don’t feel you have to be sorry, for making people think! I, personally, am pretty new to this particular forum. I would have, like others who answered you, thought that you’d have more problems with other Mormons, in investigating another religion. I was surprised to hear otherwise…which proves that I have something to learn!
Please, keep posting, when you have questions. And, it’s always good to hear from you!

Don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault that every Mormon related thread inevitably devolves into bickering between our resident LDS apologists and the handful of CAF members who really dislike Mormonism. It’s been this way long before either you or I got here. 🙂

I went through three rounds of RCIA as a (howbeit lapsed) Mormon and I was never given any grief. If anything I was treated a bit like a rock star. I get the impression they don’t see many Mormons in the program. It was actually a bit annoying constantly being asked about my mission and how Mormons “are able to snatch away so many Catholics!” At one parish I eventually became known as “the Mormon” and sometimes our group discussions would veer off into supposed Mormon doctrine. I was genuinely there to learn about Catholicism yet somebody invariably would hijack our topic and bring it back to the “absurd” religion I was raised in. Come to think of it, it was kind of like a real life version of all the tangentially related Mormon threads here!

@Ogie_Reeves,

How has your investigation gone? I’d love to hear what your first exposure to authentic Catholicism was like.

It was very fascinating and I want to keep learning more about Catholicism. Although I respectfully would like to keep my own beliefs, I want to study your religion more.

Any number of men have just “casually” studied the Catholic Church … and ended up becoming Catholic priests.

She will be only allowed certain books and music on the actual mission.

You will have no idea if you want to join or not since you don’t know everything about the Catholic Church, or the evangelical church or the faith after that. You are welcome at every church service, but you can not partake in the sacraments like communion. Either stay in your pew or come up with arms crossed over your chest to receive a blessing instead of the host. The rosary isn’t a sacrament so you may say one whether you are catholic or not.

I doubt your church will be happy with your saying a rosary unless it’s to give you some inside knowledge of Catholicism so you can more easily convert people to the LDS church from Catholicism. I swear I saw a page from a handbook that tells people converting to remove sacramentals from other churches, like rosaries and statues. Which is odd since Moroni is on top of every temple and a statue of Jesus in the visitor centers. Your mission president will have to approve your books and music when on your mission. I doubt a rosary will be allowed. You may want to study up on your new faith now since you will be expected to know so much of it in such a short time. You also may have to learn a new language in a matter of weeks depending on your call. It’s a lot.

In the LDS church people who are just there out of curiosity are met with missionaries or members hoping to hook people up with the missionaries. You can rest assured you will not be approached and encouraged to convert if you come to a catholic prayer group or a mass. There is a proces to learn and then convert but you would have to initiate that.
