My husband (Protestant background), came to me this morning saying that it is against the Bible to call a priest “father”. Mt 23:9 “And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.” (RSV-CE)
My Catholic study Bible say this is a hyperbole to post a warning against honorific titles. My husband’s study Bible does not say anything on that passage, just a reference to Mal 1:6, which is still unclear.
Can you tell me where this “conflict” of opinion came from, and where in the Bible is there a precedent/inference for calling priests “father”?
