Is it alright to wear a scapular prior to investment?

Hello there. I live in Scotland and had to wait a while on my scapular arriving from overseas, specifically from the US, since I wanted a very specific design featuring Saint Maximilian Kolbe who dedicated his life to saving people like me. You see, I’m both a former drug addict and a former Thelemite who almost became a Freemason prior to taking up prayer and really meaning it for the first time in my life. My brown scapular finally arrived today and I love it.

While I intend to attend weekday Mass tomorrow morning and ask my priest about investment there, I’m having trouble fighting my desire to wear the brown scapular right now. I want to show my dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary and my appreciation to Saint Maximilian Kolbe right away. Another problem I considered was that I’m still going through the RCIA process and haven’t become Catholic yet but I was assured by both a priest and a nun that to wear the scapular before baptism is fine although I believe the promise itself only applies to baptised Catholics. I’m fine with this and I’m wearing it mostly as a reminder of my faith until the day I am finally baptised.

The only thing I’m unsure about is whether or not it is acceptable to wear the scapular prior to investment by my priest? Will I have to wait until after I’ve been baptised before this can happen? Any replies would be much appreciated.

I feel very sure Mary would love you to wear it.

And congratulations on your wonderful step to:
“He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him.” You have been truly graced.

May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.

Thank you, Fred. This is reassuring. Wearing it certainly feels like the right thing to do.

I look forward to further consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary once I’m finally baptised so I’m glad I can at least do this in the meantime.

You would not be “invested” until after your baptized…

That is of course what to aim at now -and such will be a splendid event --for baptism washes away all our sins…and gives us true life!

I had assumed this was the case but I wasn’t entirely sure. Thanks for the clarification.

“…what then happens with us? Paul answers: You have become one in Christ (cf. Gal 3:28). Not just one thing, but one, one only, one single new subject. This liberation of our “I” from its isolation, this finding oneself in a new subject means finding oneself within the vastness of God and being drawn into a life which has now moved out of the context of “dying and becoming”. The great explosion of the Resurrection has seized us in Baptism so as to draw us on. Thus we are associated with a new dimension of life into which, amid the tribulations of our day, we are already in some way introduced. To live one’s own life as a continual entry into this open space: this is the meaning of being baptized, of being Christian. This is the joy of the Easter Vigil. The Resurrection is not a thing of the past, the Resurrection has reached us and seized us. We grasp hold of it, we grasp hold of the risen Lord, and we know that he holds us firmly even when our hands grow weak. We grasp hold of his hand, and thus we also hold on to one another’s hands, and we become one single subject, not just one thing. I, but no longer I: this is the formula of Christian life rooted in Baptism, the formula of the Resurrection within time.”

~ Pope Benedict XVI

Congratulations on your steps to the church! By the way what scapular are you using?

Oh I see. Sorry. Not paying enough attention evidently. The brown scapular. Yes that’s the one I’d like to have. That’s related to the Carmelites. There’s a green one too.
🙂

Indeed it is the brown scapular.

It also has a tiny Saint Benedict Medal attached to it and I thought I should ask if it’s alright for me to wear this without any ceremony or blessing? Is there some sort of investment associated with this or can anyone wear it?

The scapular I’m wearing is handmade and this particular one came with both this tiny medal and a little crucifix on it. I’ve been wearing it constantly since I first put it on and intend to continue doing so from now on.
