Is it ALWAYS a sin to miss Mass?

I went on an overnight trip with my husband, his cousin and his cousin’s wife on New Year’s Eve. None of them are Catholic. I checked on some Mass times at a church nearby, but when I mentioned trying to go it seemed that it would inconvenience everyone else for me to go, so I dropped it, and missed Mass on New Year’s Day. Did I sin?

Dear LC,

It is always a mortal sin to deliberately miss Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation when one could attend if he or she really wanted to. So, yes according to what you have said, you did sin by seeking the approval of your friends over your obligation to God. You had an opportunity to witness to the supreme importance of God in our lives and you blew it.
