Is it appropriate for grammar school kids to read "The Da Vinci Code"?

Hello,

I really need some help in addressing a problem I have. My daughter is in 5th grade at a Catholic School and starting Middle School next year. They have a “Bridge Program” over the summer that prepares them for next year. The majority of it is reading…some math and science.

I was horrified to see that they are asking them to read either the Da Vinci Code or Angels or Demons. I myself as a Catholic would not see the Movie or read the books and yet they are asking my 11 year old to do so.

This is not the first time I have had issues about what is being taught (in 4th grade they began teaching 9 year olds that the Old Testment is basically stories eg no Adam or Eve etc) and I need to know how the Catholic Church stands on this issue before approaching the subject.

How is ok for children to read these types of books? They are just developing their Foundation in Faith…and if Adults have questioned their faith after reading these books what would that do to a child?

Am I way off base?
