Is it appropriate to incorporate an American Indian ritual in the Mass?

During Advent the last couple of years our pastor has invited members of the Menominee tribe to perform a cedar smoke ritual in lieu of the penitential rite (sins are carried up in the smoke). Seems like syncretism to me and wonder if this is allowed.

No priest has the authority to replace the penitential rite in that way.
