Is it appropriate to wear a very large crucifix 5-6 inches necklace on a daily basis?

Go for it. I’m personally a fan of smaller things (I was wearing a small plain cross before getting my 2-3 inch St. Michael medal), but go for whatever you desire.

It depends on whether one is required to (as in, belonging to an order, etc.); otherwise, appears ostentatious.

As long as it is not a danger in your workplace, why not?
By danger, I mean that if for example you’re a hospital nurse, you might run the risk of injuring a patient when said crucifix might accidentally swing out and clobber them. . . or if you work around an MRI (no metal there, please!) etc.

Why do you want to wear it? Is it to be all braggy, is it to call attention to Christ, is it all you could find, is it because you are part of an order?

It sounds a bit clunky— but if it’s your thing, go ahead. You usually find big pectoral crosses worn more by clergy/religious, but I’m not aware of any sumptuary laws in the church.

Bishops are the only diocesan clergy within the Roman Rite who are allowed to wear pectoral crosses on top of vestments or clerical suits. If priests wish to wear them, then both the cross and the chain must be concealed beneath their clothing. This, however, is not necessarily the case for some religious and Eastern Catholic Rites.

Some religious Orders wear crosses as part of their religious habit (which may appear to be pectoral crosses) usually these are distinguished from true pectoral crosses by simpler materials
such as wood and string rather than the semi/precious metals of episcopal cross and chain.

Some Eastern Catholic Rites retain the right for priests to wear the pectoral cross as per their tradition, but only in honorary cases which the priest has been granted specific dispensation to wear it.

Everyone has a style but it may be a bit obnoxious or eye rolling to people around you. I think there is a difference in letting people know your Catholic and being show about it. Remember the person with the largest most expensive Bible might not be the best Catholic in the bunch.

True story, I bought tickets for the theater yesterday and the gir behind the counter told me she liked my pendant. I wear a 3-4 inch crucifix. The cross doesn’t need to be too large to get your point across. All I’m saying.

Different topic but I think an interesting one, when I see someone wearing a cross I know Christian but if they wear a crucifix I think they are 90% likely to be Catholic. Not sure if that’s true but in my experience it tends to be.

It’s my friends, guess it’s to be Braggy but also feels “the bigger to protect me”. I thinks it’s inappropriate but wanted others opinions.

Sounds a little superstitious. Just wear a small crucifix under your shirt.

Were you thinking of sharing our opinions with her? Like, “I think it’s braggy and somewhat superstitious and so apparently do a lot of other people”. . .

I don’t know, that sounds a little like those “I’m only saying this for your own good” kind of posts that can wind up really straining a friendship. . .and for what? Her choice to wear something that you don’t think appropriate?

I’m outta here. This is starting to look like a headcovering thread, all, “is it appropriate to wear X” which turns into the usual, “No of course not, it’s prideful and looks inappropriate and wrong” virtue-shaming stuff.

I love the glove, and the little maniple over her arm. 🙂 Such awesome details. 💓

The Abbess at St Walburga’s here in Colorado has simple versions of these things. Whether the woman herself wants them doesn’t matter – it’s tradition, and these items have meaning in the Church.

There is nothing wrong with it. It’s a free country. (As we Americans like to say.)
Sure, its a free country, and if the OP or anyone else wants to wear a large crucifix, or star of david, or a pentagram for that matter, its their right.

But it still isn’t the usual thing for Catholics who aren’t members of orders or hold a position of authority in the church.

I’ve never seen it for ordinary lay people.

Thank you, it’s actually my boyfriends cross, not a females cross. I guess it’s actually embarrassing to me for him be wearing such a large pectoral crucifix outside his clothes and I wanted your opinions more to see if my feelings were innapropriate. I never would want to do something to mar someone’s love of Jesus but it’s so gaudy and he wears it outside of his shirt like a beacon. Just was checking myself not him.

My parents each have one above their bed,I think the crusefixes belonged to their parents .If they needed to hold a crusefix in their last hours they are on hand .
Personally I would think a smaller one on my person ,and a larger one to be visable to ourselves in our home.
