Is it bad to smoke after Holy Communion?

Being a smoker ie- being addicted to cigarettes is a sin. So lighting up after communion would be a sin by default.

This type of addicting/detrimental behavior is a sin of gluttony.

Now all the smokers can go ahead and bash me for saying that. Ready? Go!
You are free to hold your opinions. However, that is neither the opinion of the Church nor of God, so you can take it up with Him if you have a problem with it.

… can you really say that a Big Mac is less harmful? ** If you were to eat 20 Big Macs a day, would you even live 50 years?** If you ate 20 Big Macs a day, you almost certainly would not live to 100. And what about drinking 20 cans of beer a day? If you smoked 20 cigarettes a day, your chance of living to 100 would be reduced but not eliminated.
If anyone were to eat 20 Plastic Macs a day, hed deserve to die quick smart for trying to break the record as the worlds fattest man! 😃 So: the sin of Pride.
Eating wet cardboard (or whatever their buns are made of) cant be healthy, either, to say nothing of the number of trees felled to obtain the raw material. Maybe they use some other material now, though......i havent purchased a burger (or anything else) from them since 1976. 🤷

As for drinking 20 cans of beer a day, the old saying of being pickled, and saving the cost of embalming, would apply. 😃
Bung in The Wizard of Id would be hard put to beat that amount.
I smoke for spiritual reasons. If I didn’t smoke I’d start to think I was perfect and then the deadly sin of pride would get me! :))
Your mind has been clouded by smoke… 😃
Thankyou for your honesty! I don’t know whether my moderate smoking has got me through tough times, although it may have. However, I am quite sure that if I had tried to give up smoking during those times I would have only made my problems worse, by adding an unnecessary personal anxiety to very real and more important external obligations…
ive never smoked; but agree with you and King Lazy regarding stress-related smoking. Not condoning it; but i understand why so many folks under stress do it, and wouldnt have the hide to criticise them. After all, my knowledge of stress is first-hand.

Its no worse than smoking any other time. Your body is a temple, and smoking destroys it.
You are essentially slowly killing yourself by your free will & knowledge. Wouldn’t that make it a mortal sin? And even if not, I still would have a hard time believing that smoking cigarettes would ever be ok. I do not believe Jesus designed us just to destroy our own bodies.
What about Padre Pio?

You think the opinion of the Church and of God is that smoking too much to the point of addiction is completely OK?
2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

Yes. Exercising temperance in the use of tobacco is OK. Smoking too much, eating too much, drinking too much is not.

You are fine. It is not, I would think, as long as you respect the presence of the Lord within you.

The Church does not say that smoking is a sin. That is a fact. I challenge anybody else to prove that the Church in fact says that smoking tobacco in itself is objectively a sin.

By the way, see Blessed Pope John XXIII, below (when he was a cardinal):

Even if it isn’t, why would you want to harm your body that way? Is there anything even remotely healthy about cigarettes? Didn’t think so.
Good. Now let’s talk about cigars. After every Mass, when the considerable socializing is done, I like to kick back with a sample of Cuban agribusiness. Ideal time to ponder at length the Liturgy and the good Fathers homily. By virtue of a fine cigars expense, one is forced to drop everything and focus on the thoughts of the day - you can do little else without missing the experience.

“But it’s baaaaaaaaad for you!” Okay, I grant that it’s not as healthy as a tall cool glass of homogenized 2%. Once a week is not a significant health risk. So says my physician - one of the most popular and respected in Seattle, and one whose opinion I value infinitely more than that of any soi-disant “expert”.

Oh, and I also like a vodka Martini as an accompaniment. Flame away.

As a matter of fact, I am not a smoker, and I don’t believe I mentioned anything remotely resembling the comment I want to harm my body in any way! I was simply sharing some facts I came across while searching the site in hopes of helping the OP answer his question. The health of cigarettes are not the point of the discussion. I would wager that the OP even knows they are bad for his health, but again that is not the reason for the post.
Who said I was talking to you directly? My question I posed goes to ANYONE. 👍

Well, the day I see Jesus with a cigarette in his hand is the day ill apologize for being so against it.

I don’t think people smoke because they want to get cancer, but they do smoke for various reasons, regardless of the health risks. Some smoke even though they hate it simply because they’re addicted and they cannot stop. Some smoke intentionally for social reasons, especially if they don’t like drinking or cannot drink, because they find it helps them make new friends. Some smoke because tobacco has fairly potent antidepressant effects with fewer sexual side effects. Some smoke because it helps keep them thin. Some smoke quite simply because they enjoy it and it gives them pleasure.
I understand this. But just because you enjoy something doesn’t mean you should do it. People enjoy having sex, but does that mean you should run around sleeping with everyone? You mentioned that if you had not been a smoker, you might have needed medication or medical attention. Perhaps that would of been the right thing to do? Smoking to ‘feel good’ would of only hid your problems, not dealt with them directly. You also mentioned that alot of people smoke for social reasons. If this is the case, I say to them that they should get new friends! Find friends to do healthy things with. (: I am glad you stopped smoking. God bless.

OP:

It is not disrespectful to smoke after Mass, but not immediately. Immediately shows lack of moderation, and frankly, signs of an inherent addiction to tobacco. It is better to wait to get to your car, and I would not, for it gives way to sinful behavior, smoking on church grounds.
Drive off church grounds to smoke, or at least finish your cigarette off the premises, driving away cigarette in hand.

It is respect for the most blessed sacrament and for the sanctity of church grounds, that you WAIT. You may even smoke on the curb/sidewalk, tossing the cigarette(s) into the street/asphalt. Smoking outside the church is to be shunned, yet not prohibited.

Cigarette ash is nearly unnoticeable and I would say permissible to fall on church grounds, but not the butt of the cigarette. That is disrespectful.

You do whatever you feel personally comfortable with

If you need to ask whether its bad to smoke after Holy Communion are you really comfortable with smoking after Holy Communion?

If someone says no you should not smoke after - then how long do you give yourself.

Its nothing to do with anyone else but you and only you can decided what you should be doing straight after. I have heard many a conversation straight after Holy Communion that perhaps be better left an hour or so later or even better unsaid at all sometimes.

But we are human and we will sin within seconds after receiving Holy Commuion and God still loves us. So do whatever you feel comfortable with, not whatever anyone tells you
