Is it common in states with gay marriage for Conservative protestant churches to fly their state flag upside down?

Just wondering because I had a job interview in Iowa where gay marriage is legal. At the LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) Church in this town, they flew the American flag, but flew the Iowa Flag upside down (i didn’t notice and at first I couldn’t tell what flag it was). Is this a common practice among conservative protestants in places where gay marriage is legal.

Also, for those Catholics looking here. Why don’t we fly the American Flag upside down in protests of abortion? I know theres the whole give unto ceasar issue, but flying the flag upside down doesn’t show disrespect of the country, just its laws that we hope to change.

Taken from the Flag Code of the US. Bolding mine.

§ 176. Respect for flag: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
**(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property**

Then it is imminently appropriate for us to fly it upside down in a nation that has enthroned all four of the traditional sins that cry out for vengeance including and especially willful murder.

👍 I kind of agree. I think the anti-abortion movement should do this. Especially if our federal government keeps going the way it is on these issues. I’m sure the American Church doesn’t wake to anger Conservative Superpatriots in the pews though.

Please explain to me how “dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property” fits in with your description above.

I kind of get it with abortion and “willful murder”, Although, more and more states are enacting much more stringent laws concerning abortion, to the point where abolishing it is right around the corner.

To me, that would preclude the “dire” aspect.

Before you flame on me for this, I’m just trying to follow your reasoning.
