Is it ethical for doctors to just pass the buck regarding abortion?

Hi,

I’m a Catholic medical student and I have been wondering whether it is ethical for doctors who are “pro-life” and refuse to perform abortions to just pass the “buck” and refer the patient wanting an abortion to a doctor who will do it. I know of several Catholic doctors who do this saying “We have to in the interest of the patient’s care” but it just doesn’t seem quite right.

I’d be grateful for your advice.

Dear Jonny,

No, it is not ethical. They are simply enabling the patient to get an abortion from someone else. If they are truly interested in the patient’s welfare, they will nave NO PART WHATSOEVER in assisting the patient in pursuing an abortion—period!
