Is it ever ok to use a Protestant Bible version?

I have a book that contains “Christian Apocrypha”. The Apocolyspe of St. Peter states St. Peter was given a vision of hell.

Now that’s interesting, the Apocalypse of Peter (not to be confused with the Gnostic work of the same name, written in Coptic); it’s a shame that it does not exist completely save for fragments. If y’all haven’t guessed I’m professionally interested in Extrabiblical writings (especially the NT Apocrypha, Gnostic or no).

Some, however, might find trouble with it due to its description of the inhabitants of Heaven or read racist tones into it (God forbid):

6 And as we prayed, suddenly there appeared two men standing before the Lord (perhaps add, to the east) upon whom we were not able to look.
7 For there issued from their countenance a ray as of the sun, and their raiment was shining so as the eye of man never saw the like: for no mouth is able to declare nor heart to conceive the glory wherewith they were clad and the beauty of their countenance.
8 Whom when we saw we were astonied, for their bodies were whiter than any snow and redder than any rose.
9 And the redness of them was mingled with the whiteness, and, in a word, I am not able to declare their beauty.
10 For their hair was curling and flourishing (flowery), and fell comely about their countenance and their shoulders like a garland woven of nard and various flowers, or like a rainbow in the air: such was their comeliness.

I recently purchased a small (miniture actually) 66 book version of the ESV with a soft leather cover published by Crossway. It has an embedded cross on the front.

I like it. It’s the first ESV I have purchased for myself. I bought the ESV study edition for my Mom and Grandmother. The study edition is filled with good info, however the doctrine is Baptist in the footnotes, which is great for them since they are Baptist anyway.

The ESV that I have only has references. It does not have any notes. I like it. I am looking forward to the new version with the Deuterocanonical books. I wish the NASB would have the Deuterocanonicals. The NASB is one of the better translations.

I keep NAB, KJV, ASV and YLT on my palm phone. It’s always on my belt… Makes for a nice pun when I tell Protestants that “We Catholics take ‘Bible Belt’ literally”

While I totally agree we must keep in mind that the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Mormons were both products of the Protestant revolution in protesting the one true Church of Jesus Christ. The third category of which you note can be said to be all who distort the nature of our God. Both Catholics and Protestants acknowledge the triune nature of God but after that we drift apart.

Because both Mormons and JW’s set up new, but authoritative, and very hierarchical churches. Miniature versions of the Catholic church, if you will.

I guess Joseph Smith and Pastor Russell recognized the need for an authoritative interpreter of scripture, and so set up their own versions of it, the Mormon church and the Watchtower Society.

The Watchtower Society publishes its own version, The New World Translation, which translates controversial passages to favor their theology.
