Is it evil to summon demons to make you virtuous? I’m guessing it is.

But also is it even possible to do this? I mean, wouldn’t it be contradictory for a devil to make you virtuous and to be at your service to do this?

Yes it is – and gravely sinful. And further dangerous as well.

If a demon did anything…it would be deceptive.

Inasmuch as demons hate you beyond any human conception of hate, it is impossible for me to believe one would ever be helpful in any manner. But one of them might certainly deceive a person into thinking so, in order to lead him to ruin.

Run as far from this kind of thinking as you possibly can.

Yes and it won’t work.

What sense does it make to summon the very beings that try to prevent you from being virtuous to make you make you virtuous?

Why not invoke Jesus Christ or our Blessed Mother? Say a novena to saint, pray the rosary.

I’m sure Jesus, the guy who died for you not to go to Hell cares more about you staying virtuous than that some demon whose mission is to stop you from being virtuous!

Why would you even trust a demon to do anything for you?

I guess I don’t understand. How could a demon make you virtuous?? Jesus Crist is the epitome of virtue. A demon is the polar opposite.

The Church is very clear that any act that is intrinsically evil or immoral is never justifiable. Basically, the ends can never justify the means if those means are objectively sinful. This is official teaching (I’m too lazy to look it up, but it is in the CCC…maybe one of our more studious and energetic posters will post the exact section for me), so the answer is “yes” and it is clearly stated as such.

As to if it is possible, I would believe it to not be possible. Demons are not mortal beings, and as such, I don’t know that they have the ability to do anything contrary to the essence of their being. Just as it is impossible for God to lie, or to hate, I think it would be impossible for a demon to bestow virtue. If a demon bestowed virtue on someone, the being couldn’t be a demon.

I love the signature on your post. But the way I heard it was “Samson killed lots of people with the jawbone of an ***. Same thing happens in some churches today!”)

For Judaism, this would most likely mean summoning demons within yourself, or creating external demons by committing sins. In either case, the demon created would not honor your request to be virtuous since its being is the product of your own vice.

An interesting post from the Jewish perspective. Although Catholicism teaches demons to be actual sentient beings, and not just allegorical figures, the interesting commonality is none the less that it would still be doing something contrary to the very essence of its nature.

:rotfl: I like it! I have also modified it in conversation as “first century Jerusalem is not the only time or place in the history of humanity that Jesus has elected to arrive on the back of a jackass”. Either way…

But they are not essentially evil beings; such a thing cannot exist.

Now this is the real problem behind the question: if asking the devil to make you a good person is evil, then no good person would ever desire it. But good people desire virtue, so then wouldn’t a good person, in being virtuous, have to deny getting virtue? And this is a contradiction.

So then I ask, can this scenario even happen, for it seems to be impossible from what I just wrote. Now the devils cannot give perfect virtues, but perhaps they can tempt with imperfect virtues, just as they tempt with imperfect truth. So can they? You say no, but I don’t think this conclusion follows from the premises. All hinges on whether they can or not and I certainly have no clue as to how to answer.

Yes they are. How can such a thing “not exist” in your mind? Are you wanting to debate philosophy or actual Christian teaching?

Wow, this is…weird.

Put simply, summoning demons is forbidden and dangerous. Looking for help from the devil and demons is just beyond my little mind to comprehend. It’s nonsensical, not to mention the fact that demons and the devil are beneath the holy angels and God the Father in intelligence and power. It’s like going to a Chevy dealership to buy a Cobalt, expecting to get the same quality and power as a Porsche. I just don’t get it.

Peace…

It’s philosophy. Augustine, Aquinas and others elaborated on the notion of evil as a kind of nonbeing. Pure evil would be pure nonbeing, which by definition does not exist. The mere existence of the devil is in and of itself a good, since existence is a good. Even though the devil is bad.

Ontological perfection is not akin to moral perfection. The devil is an ontologically perfect being, since there is no potentiality in him, only pure actuality, however he and all demons are morally vicious.

I didn’t know that, but then I’ve never read their works. Just seems silly to me to think of such things when Scripture and Tradition are pretty clear on the answer. Does the question make sense to you?

Peace…
