Went to go pick up subs from a sub shop, then my friend wanted me to go eat with her. I decided I would just eat the sub for dinner. Went to lunch with friend, was full, but still wanted to eat the sub. I ended up not eating dinner for the sake of fear of gluttony, but…was it actually a sin?

Not sure.

I noticed that you’ve been posting A LOT of threads mentioning doubts about many subjects. If you can, try to buy a CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church). If you still have doubts, mention them in confession. To me, it seems that there is a possibility that you could be suffering from Scrupulosity.

If you weren’t actually hungry and the sub would stay good to use for the next day’s lunch (or something along those lines), then it may have been the right decision to leave it till then.

Then again you might be over-thinking these sorts of moral problems.

The desire to eat is not a sin - it is an emotion. Emotions are not sinful, they are things which happen to you - they tell you something about yourself. What you do with the emotion (that is, how you involve your ability to choose) determines if you have sinned.

The question is, why did you want to eat the sub? If your intent was to eat dinner (which is normal) then, no eating the sub would not have been sinful.

Now, if you start using the food significantly beyond its purpose (nutrition, perhaps combined with social purposes, etc.) then it becomes sinful. If food is “abused” for the purpose of pleasure (or worse, has become part of a psychological addiction mechanism), then you would be moving into a sinful situation. When does this happen? There is no magical “line” when this happens: it is a judgment that you have to make.

Temptation is never a sin. You did not give in to this temptation therefore you did not sin.

As a personal note and as much as I hate the word gluttony, gluttony it is a constant and terrible temptation for me as well. But, now that I have admitted it, I am becoming stronger against this temptation.

It is not a sin to look forward to eating. God gave us an appetite for very good reasons. The enjoyment of food is a gift that should not be abused.

Anorexia is another terrible temptation closely related to gluttony and needs to be treated with the same hard work and love for God’s gifts.

👍 Those were my thoughts, too- given the nature of her numorous questions on here.

You have posted nearly a dozen posts on here in a matter of hours afraid that everything you do (or don’t do) is a sin.

You need to seek guidance from a priest immediately as these sorts of spiritual issues cannot be solved on the internet. These are signs of scrupulosity. This will take some intensive spiritual direction to overcome.

Do not delay, talk to your priest as soon as possible.

Looking at this post and a few others, I think you’re being a little too scrupulous. Eat when you’re hungry, wear clothes and fashion accessories (earrings) that look good on you but aren’t inappropriate, sleep when you’re tired, and call your friend when you need some company.

This is more of a physical thing than a theological one. Sometimes we’re hungry even when our stomachs are full because we still need some nutrient. What did you eat with your friend? If you had a high carb, low-protein meal, I bet you were hungry soon after. No sin in that, but if you feel like the sub would be too much, have something lighter or more sensible like carrots with ranch, pretzels with peanut butter, toast with jam, etc.
