Is it good to hate this life?

"Before any cosmic act of reform we must have a cosmic oath of allegiance. A man must be interested in life, then he could be disinterested in his views of it. “My son give me thy heart”; the heart must be fixed on the right thing: the moment we have a fixed heart we have a free hand…what we need is not the cold acceptance of the world as a compromise, but some way in which we can heartily hate and heartily love it.

We do not want joy and anger to neutralize each other and produce a surly contentment; we want a fiercer delight and a fiercer discontent. We have to feel the universe at once as an ogre’s castle, to be stormed, and yet as our own cottage, to which we can return at evening. No one doubts that an ordinary man can get on with this world: but we demand not strength enough to get on with it, but strength enough to get it on.

Can he hate it enough to change it, and yet love it enough to think it worth changing? Can he look up at its colossal good without once feeling acquiescence? Can he look up at its colossal evil without once feeling despair? Can he, in short, be at once not only a pessimist and an optimist, but a fanatical pessimist and a fanatical optimist? Is he enough of a pagan to die for the world, and enough of a Christian to die to it? In this combination, I maintain, it is the rational optimist who fails, the irrational optimist who succeeds. He is ready to smash the whole universe for the sake of itself."
G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

I think that is your answer.

You gotta love Chesterton! :yup:

You cannot please both God and the world at the same time. They are utterly oppose to each other in their thoughts, their desires, and their actions.
–St. John Vianney

I thought God MADE the world, and everything in it.

You’re right, Robert. God and the world are opposed. I’m still with you.

I think we should consider what Jesus means by “this world”. Jesus died for us in this world. Mother Theresa did her work in this world. People feed the hungry in this world. So therefore I think that Jesus does not mean life in this world in general but I think he is referring to a vision of our lives that attaches itself to this world. We can do well to consider the true value (or lack thereof) of certain pleasures. This is a challenge to us. For example, is there anything wrong with enjoying a good meal? I think not. However we should “hate” the idea of food as a false idol. The truth shall set us free. We experience more joy “in this world” in a relationship with Jesus than anything this world alone can offer. Also, I think that we are called to consider that this world is temporal.

True. But is that the same thing as everything in creation being stamped with Satan’s hand?

Of course not. We have people and religion that are created good.

My basic contention is to compare this world to the World to Come. With such a comparison, this world is filled with evil.

Our world is a world of good and evil.

I love the good in this life and hate the evil. I try to fight against the evil and nurture the good. I try to transform this world into more of a heavenly place, though our real heaven will be with God the father at our death.

I’m too forward looking I think. I’m always thinking about the Hereafter.

In this world I pay special attention to the seven deadly sins, especially pride.

Maybe there’s no such thing as too forward-looking in this instance.

It is good to be careful to avoid occasions of sin and to be on guard against sinning. Yes, to keep vigilant is a noble thing and what we are commanded to do. Just make sure you always remember to keep joy in your life: joy in serving Christ, joy in loving God and joy in loving neighbor - which I would imagine you do. Maybe because of your unique circumstances you have a great focus on sin and don’t experience the affective nature of love, but, still, don’t lose sight of the joy of loving, the joy of being loved, and the transforming power these joys have on this suffering and needy world of ours. The world depends on us to be prophets, healers, teachers, friends (yes, even friends) to help save souls for Jesus and to help redeem this place we call our earthly home.

Good for you…then you are a follower of Jesus for that is precisely what He is looking for…troops who declare with him…“this is not my kingdom” how many times I have read about young starlets who have to go to the casting couch…and answer the ultimate hollyweird question " 'How far are you willing to go to advance your career?" Look at the disgraceful exhibition of our ruling class and how they have glorified a pedophile who performed weird tricks on his skinny body and face …a creature who bragged on a teevee interview that he sleeps with little boys and so what?..An article on Worldnetdaily.com today reports on the silent treatment given to a veteran who was killed '‘over there’ while the lap dog media ooed and ahhed over MJ…and so it goes…yes one should hate this world for its satans domain and one with eyes to see and ears to hear easily can acknowledge that fact.

I hate the evil in this world. It pains me to see what something that used to be so good can become. But I cannot and will not hate the good that still endures here, and because the world is both good and evil, I cannot hate this world. Can’t wait for heaven, but until then…

You do NOT know any of those things you claim, and you are grossly distorting the things you have ‘reported.’ Where is your charity?

There is still good IN the world - like people and nature and music and love and so much more. We are not made for this world and so we will run into problems with it - but we do still have to take care of each other and the planet, and treat others in the world like brothers and sisters, which we all are for one another. We shouldn’t be rude and direspectful of people, but should always try and win over to Christ the lost souls we know of, whether through prayer and kind deeds or by refraining from insulting them out of love for God and love for them. It can be hard, but we should always try and be good. We still have to respect the dignity of persons - even our criminals. (And I am not making any reference to the previous post. I don’t know why that celebrity did what he did. He could just be way too eccentric. He and God knows why he did what he did, not I. I will not place myself as his judge.)
