Can we drink holy water, and if so, will it give us graces?

When we consume the host, it is no longer the body of Christ.
But when we drink Holy Water, is it still Holy water, or does it turn into regular water?

Thank you.

Holy Water is a sacramental, which means it is set aside for religious purposes. Holy water has many appropriate religious purposes, but it is not intended for drinking, and this would be considered inappropriate.

You asked if it was a sin. If you **EVER **ask if **ANYTHING **is a sin, then it is not. It doesn’t matter what it is. If you genuinely don’t know it’s wrong, it is never sinful (at least not for you).

If a person knew that drinking holy water was inappropriate and did it anyway as a deliberate sign of disrespect to the Church then it could be a sin (depending on how perfect his knowledge and intent were).

Also, sacramentals do not give us Grace (that’s what Sacraments do).

Actually there is nothing wrong with drinking holy water. Eastern Catholics do it all the time as a way of blessing themselves. I have heard of many including it as a part of their morning prayers. It is done respectfully and prayerfully, the same as other ways of blessing oneself with the water.

It may not be as common in the Latin Church but it is done, just think of Lourdes, I believe it is very common to drink the water from there.

Depends where one got the holy water, obviously.

I would not drink water that everybody had been putting their hands into!!!

But absent that issue , as someone said, folks drink water from the springs at Lourdes, or Betania, or the Sea of Galilee, all the time. So it wouldn’t be “wrong.”

A reply from Father Vincent in regards to whether or not we can drink holy water.
He said it was okay.
Hello,

It is okay to drink holy water. But it won’t give you graces like you would get if you
like, prayed the Rosary everyday or went to confession.

But the point of holy water isn’t to drink to get graces.

Holy water is used as a sacramental in the baptismal ceremony, for sanctification and protection against evil etc. At night time you could bless your house/bedroom by sprinkling holy water and saying a little prayer to accompany it.

***St. Theresa of Avila on holy water: “From long experience I have learned that there is nothing like holy water to put devils to flight and prevent them from coming back again. They also flee from the cross, but return; so holy water must have great value.”

Holy water is a means of spiritual wealth – a sacramental that remits venial sin. The Church strongly urges its use, especially when dangers threaten. The devil hates holy water because of its power over him. He cannot long abide in a place or near a person that is often sprinkled with this blessed water.***

While I haven’t taken to adding holy water to my soups, yet, I do regularly use blessed salt in my cooking.
