I’m aware suicide is a mortal sin, and we need to pray for the souls that have fell victim to it.
What about laying down your life though? If a soldier diving on a grenade to save his squad, would he have committed mortal sin?

it is a matter of intent. People who do as you ask are not intending to commit suicide, and as a matter of fact, not all die.

Jesus said: “Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

What if you were in mortal sin and layed down your life to save someone else’s, yu would go to Hell for eternity for saving someone.

1 Peter 4:8 “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins .” …

Who knows. But if someone knows they are in mortal sin, they can always make an act of contrition, instead of not acting. Such an act may very well be the act that ends up saving their soul and making it to purgatory. I don’t think God allows a soul to accidentally fall into hell.

I’m sure that if you hadn’t confessed then you’d need perfect contrition, with the intent to confess ASAP to absolve that mortal sin as you die.

I think laying down your life for someone else is in some cases virtuous and even obligatory e.g A soldier fights to defend his country

St Maximilian Kolbe took another fellow inmates execution, ie went to death in his place.

He’s a martyr.

Because even if you don’t jump on that grenade there’s no guarantee that you’ll die sinless at a later date.
Totally agree.

Just wanted to add if you are close enough to jump on an exploding grenade and no one else jumps on it first you are probably going to die right then and there, in mortal sin anyway.

God Bless

You don’t think heroism and cowardice and an act of sacrificial love would affect the state of ones soul?

I think you’re thinking of God as some kind of robot who just sorts people into two piles. It’s kinda weird.
Matthew 13:49 This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the upright.

Matthew 25:33 He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left.

After 7 years of combat, I would say jump out of the way if possible. And give the enemy the opportunity to give his life for his cause. And pray for them of course!
